Hey does anyone know if its ok to swap hard drives from one laptop to another? My brother and I (soon) will have m505x centrino laptops.

I am using his right now and I am buying one now as i type.

My question is:

My stuff is on the the current m505x hard drive can i just swap that hard drive to my new m505x when it comes in with no bios or compatiblitiy driver issues?

Thanks in advance!

I would believe so, if you guys have the exact same model. However with Windows, nothing is 100% guaranteed...

If they are identical systems at the base level you're fine (i.e. between two M505 systems, as you said). It's ok if the two machines have different amounts of memory in them. If there are major hardware differences, like going between a M505 and another type of laptop, it might turn into a mess and require loading a bunch of device drivers, or possibly even require reloading Windows altogether.

You can also use the Files and Settings wizard to move your account and settings over to the new machine if you prefer not to mess with the hard drives, or if your brother wants to retain his data on his machine. The two machines have to be connected together in a network (wired or wireless) or via some sort of direct cable connection for this to work. Just take precautions to do this on a private network if possible, as Files and Settings wizard moves data "in the clear".

yeah i transfered data before on my apple with the firewire... but i thought just swapping hard drives will be the easiest since we both will have the same laptop with same exact specs. Thanks guys!

If its one M505 to another, you can just pop the drive out and put it in the new system. I've transfered my 7200 rpm Hitachi to 3 M505X's in the past 3 days and it didn't even hiccup.
