Missing authentication tab in network connections

I tried connecting my computer to a hub recently, and it would not work. Two other computers were connected, and they saw each other (in fact, they were playing Halo together) but I was the only other computer on the hub and it did not work when connected to my computer. Also, it was a wired-only hub so we were all connected to it via ethernet cables.

The lights were on, Windows detected the connection, but Windows did say "Limited or no connectivity", however both of the other two computers said that as well and like I said, they worked fine.

So anyway, my computer just would not connect to the other people on the hub. I do have a firewall but I am very good at configuring it so I am absolutely sure it was not the problem. The problem, I think, lies in this missing Authentication tab.

If you have a wired connection and it is connected (or even wireless), try this: double-click the connection in your system tray or go to control panel > network connections > double-click the connection. A status window pops up, and in that window click the Properties button. In that new window, there should be three tabs: General, Authentication, Advanced. I only see two.

A suggestion online was to enable the Wireless Zero Configuration service. I did so, but the tab remains missing. I wonder if it is a registry key, a simple 0 or 1 value that is set to 0 for me. At least, that's what I'm hoping, but I doubt it.

Is anyone else reading this missing that tab? Has anyone else had trouble with connecting to a hub? If you have figured out what was wrong, please tell me!

Oh and I also tried the network setup wizard on each setup option, still no luck and no authentication tab. This is the weirdest thing I have ever seen. If it helps anyone, I have Windows XP Media Center Professional 2005 (xp pro, plus media center programs). And for anyone who doesn't already know, a hub is very different from a router! Look it up on wikipedia if you don't know the difference. I connect to my router just fine, both wireless and wired, so there is no problem with my drivers or devices.

I only have General and Advanced tabs on my wireless connection, and it works great.

1) What were the IP addresses and netmasks of the other 2 people?
2) What was your IP address and netmask?
3) Were you all in the same workgroup?

1) Not sure about the netmasks but the IPs were something like 169... and 192.168.2.3
2) 169.something and 255.255.0.0
3) No

And your wireless connection is connected to a hub? Because I am still missing the tab when I am connected wirelessly to my router, and it works great too, it was just the hub that caused problems.

If all of you are getting your addressing through Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA), your IP addresses will all be in the 169.254.0.0-169.254.255.255 range with a netmask of 255.255.0.0. As long as all of you are in the same address range, then you'll all be in the same subnet and be able to communicate properly. You can check out your addressing by opening a command prompt window and entering ipconfig /all.

The Authentication tab is for wireless connections running under the Wireless Zero Config service, not for wired connections.

My wireless connection is being maintained by the Atheros utility, that's why I don't have the Athentication tab. My wireless connection is through my access point.
