4200rpm to 7200 rpm HD performance

Thread Starter
I curently own a gateway mx6455 with a 120gb 4200 rom HD. Later in the future im looking at a Dell notebook. Im wondering if I can purchase a HD at 7200 rpm and use it in my gateway and later swap it over to my dell notebook??? Also, how much of a differnece will i see for example in a game....going from a 4200 rpm to a 7200 rpm HD??? Will it run much faster and will i see a bigger perforamnce boost??? thanks

If you have enough ram, you wont see any difference in performance, but maybe in load times. I have 2 gig and the hard drive light never flashes. Also, there are two kinds of laptop drives now: SATA and IDE. I do believe there are 7200rpm drives with SATA and IDE.

I have to disagree with the above post, I think you will see a performance gain in the game with a 7200 RPM drive, there is a faster data throughput and usually results in a faster loaded game.

Your main concerns is

1. Drive compatibility from this laptop to the Future Dell
2. Price Vs Performance gain...if its worth the price for the gain then go for it.

I have a thread somewhere in this forum, where I benchmarked a 5400 Vs 7200 drive in the same 9400 laptop, if memory serves me correct there was a around a 20 percent gain in perfromace.

Good Luck

If you dont have enough ram, yes you would see better performance. Also, i said in my post, yes you will see faster load times. As far as FPS, you will only see a difference if you dont have enough ram. If you have 2 Gig of ram, you will not see any increase in FPS. That last statement goes for todays games, not tomorrows. In my opinion, money would be better spent on extra RAM, unless you already have 2 gig.
