Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG driver affecting network card

Hello all!

I've got a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network card, which has been working perfectly since I got it, and I uninstalled the PRO/Wireless software and let Windows manage my wireless network without any problems.

Last night I was checking out Dell's downloads for my notebook and saw a critical driver update for this Intel card, but after reading about it and then updating the driver I couldn't get better than a Very Good signal and every time I rebooted I had to connect to my network manually, so I rolled back the driver and now it connects automatically again, but I'm no longer getting an Excellent signal and "only" Very Good. I can't remember the driver versions right now and don't have access to check them right now.

Does anybody have any ideas or know what the problem could be?

Yeah, that update seems to be broken. It crashed twice on installation on my 2915AGB. Best is to get the newest driver from intel directly - take the driver only package around 5MB. Then download WPA2 Patch from Microsoft and you don't need that memory wasting intel thingy

I'm now using the driver 10.5.1.69 and was still having problems last night, but so far today my wireless connection is stable and performing much better/quicker than the last couple of weeks. I've been having a lot of drop-outs and no wireless connection at boot up without having to repair the connection.

Is there any way of downloading just the driver or extracting the Dell EXE file without it automatically installing the PRO/Wireless software so I can get to the driver, as I don't like using the Intel software and have to uninstall it every time?

After the Dell EXE has finished extracting there is just an OK option, which when pressed launches the PRO/Wireless installation with no option to cancel or choose the components I want to install.

Is that this one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357 ?

I installed it, but it's not showing in Add or Remove Programs, yet there's an NtUninstall folder.

I've just realised that this should be in the Dell 15 Inches & Below CORE DUO/SOLO Series Notebooks forum.
