The "recommend me a laptop" thread

If I get good scores (2250+) on my SAT's, my parents have decided to reward me with a laptop. My price range will be < $1700. I have already done my research and here's what I want:
-15.4" screen
-Dedicated videocard that can run WC3, CS:S, BF2 at medium to high resolutions
-1GB RAM minimum, preferably 2GB
-100GB/5400rpm or bigger harddrive
-Core 2 Duo
-Good LCD, but I won't be too picky about light leakage and stuff like that I just want it to look sharp
-Available from a reputable reseller (Amazon, Newegg, etc)
-I basically want the best bang for the buck

From there, I've narrowed it down to these notebooks:

Asus Z/S96j: it seems that many websites and companies rebadge these and sell them (ibuypower and cyberpowerpc) i've heard some stories of the x1600 in there overheating from games.
Acer Aspire 5680: I don't see any store having this in stock other than NCIX. the 7600 in here is rumored to be a crippled version.
Asus A8Js: When I read the spec sheet for this laptop, my heart skipped a beat. I thought I'd found the perfect one, but then I saw the 14.1" screen size.
Dell Inspiron E1505: It only offers up to a x1400.

I haven't looked into other brands yet. I keep on hearing good things about Sony notebooks, but over the years I've been shying away from Sony because they frequently udnerdeliver and overcharge. Maybe someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Brands such as Sager are out of my pricerange.

I would really appreciate it if someone gave me some recommendations. [:

What will you use it for?

Asus's are built like tanks. They have the best build quality i have ever seen on a laptop (with my laptop ownership level going into the 30's now) I do a lot of laptop's sales tho and have played with just about every brand. I own a Asus for my work and love it

I will use this for mainly schoolwork and occasional gaming (WC3, BF2, CS 1.6, CS:Source)

As for Asus laptops, are they planning on releasing any new laptops between now and Christmas? I will probably get it around Christmas. The A8Js seems soooo perfect but it's only a 14" screen.

^^^ only news I've heard of asus and new laptops I really doubt that Any laptop make (besides apple) is going to release a new major laptop line. The 945 chipsets are the current standard and until intel starts making quad's readily available (which will probably require a new chipset knowing intel) As for the 14" screen I currently own a z63a (single core 14") And it is very functional for what i want it to do.

If you plan on gaming tho dedicated is a must.

I went down from a 17" to a 14" when I got this asus and it really didn't bother me that much.

The V1J will hopefully be coming to the US by the end of the year, and most, if not all, of Asus' Core Duo models are being refreshed with Core 2 Duo CPUs, and some have slightly upgraded graphics cards as well (ATI x1600 -> x1700 and Nvidia 7600 -> 7700)

I have the Z96J and play BF2 all the time and love the computer. The palm rest gets a little warm but the computer hasn't had any issues with over heating. Check out Gen Tech PC. He has great feedback. I got my computer from him and would definitely buy from him again.

have you checked out a 14" widescreen? i game on my A8j and it's quite lovely. when i'm in the dorm i use an external monitor, but at the house i use the LCD. also, if you plan to take it to classes with you, you might want to consider a 14" for greater portability and smaller footprint.

i had a 15" before, and it was just too bulky for class :/
