Kubuntu wireless suddenly working.....

Hello all - yes an odd title but it kinda says it all. I have an odd query which I am not sure how to put across but here goes....

I am almost there (i.e. dumping XP). Two things were holding me up - WoW and Wireless. The former may be sorted out by the new Beta of CrossOver (well we'll see....). The latter - well....

Initially Kubuntu could see my wireless adapter etc. It could locate my router, saw it and tried to connect - asked for the key etc. and yet it wouldn't connect. Tried all sorts of advice but to no avail. So I went to a lot of trouble getting a conventional wired connection. For some reason I tried it again today and voila - it worked and connected! KNetworkManager had not been upgraded since I last tried it and the only thing that I did was to install the Gnome desktop since then... (hmmmm).

I shut my laptop down for a few hours and restarted and all is still ok.

Is wireless really that fickle under Linux? Can I more or less rely now on a stable connection or should I expect it to 'barf' out again? The reason why I want the functionality is not for home per se but for reliable connections on the move....

I appreciate that this may be a rather dumb question and lacking somewhat in information but in truth I'm not really sure what else to say as the Gnome Desktop was the only upgrade that was made...

Don't get me wrong - I am happy - but somewhat not convinced...

Cheers,

Fuzzmo

PS. The connection is secured via WPA which is what I initially thought was the problem except that it wouldn't even connect via WEP either.....

the gnome package includes some network (especially wireless) related junk so maybe you just got lucky w/ something being installed that lacked in clean kubuntu (kde). the connection is generally pretty reliable...

as per WoW...you'll need to get your hands on the latest Cedega, its been reported it runs WoW fine.

wireless can be kinda fickle under windows too. I had a heck of a time getting it working properly in XP, and kinda like you, it just spontaneously worked one day. I have not yet got it up under Linux, but I haven't really spent much time on it either.

glad you got it working. I wouldn't worry about unless you have problems in the future.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Well I guess it must have been something with the Gnome install which kicked it into life. Tried out the latest Cedega and I can get WoW running pretty well too!!! Except the sky seems all off as if it is in 8 nit colour or something - not sure why that is. All options are maxxed (have 512Mb 7900 GTX and 2GB of RAM). Didn't install the game per se but rather linked to it instead. Should there be any difference? Would setting OpenGl in the config.wtf have any effect? Apologies for going off the beaten track...

I stopped playing wow about 3 months ago, but I was able to play it perfectly at 1920x1200 on my laptop. That's probably the best supported windows game in linux. Cedega is definitely the way to go. I bet the newer builds are even better than the ones I used.

I assume just using the wow profile should be enough. I would also check the transgaming forums to see if there are any other tweaks you should make.
