where to find parts for 9860

Thread Starter
Whats up everyone.

I'll get straight to the point. My sager 9860 has reached that age when things start to go wrong. So at about 1 year and 9 months my laptop desides to tell me "goodbye". Now it displays the following symtoms:

***When turned on, laptop shows it has power (fans kick on, clock panel shows time, power light shows ON) but no display. (AC or Battery, no difference)

***No P.O.S.T screen at all.

***Hard drive light shows as active

***Tried to plug into external monitor, no effect.

***LCD screen does nothing, shows nothing, not even a flash or blip

***DJ mode works (being able to play music without booting windows, speakers work fine)

Now, based on your guys threads, i have reason to beleive that the motherboard desided to die. If thats the case, i either need to send it back to sager where i spend $$$$ amount to let them fix it, or try to find the motherboard and fix it myself (and a freind).

So, after saying all that, Does anyone know of any websites, a person, or any place that sells the Sager 9860 motherboard. I have looked all over the web, and for the life of me, i can't find anything.

Thanks

The Exact same thing happened to me just recently at 1 yr, 8 mos. Sent it back to Sager, they called and said bad Motherboard and Hard drive (which is odd because I hooked the hd into my desktop and transferred as much info as I could before I sent it in to them.) Anyway, they said $400 for the MB, $115 for a replacement HD, $80 labor, and $30 for shipping via UPS Ground. SOOOOOO, it was pay the $600 or trash the laptop, I chose to pay. A lot of thought went into it, read my recent posts and you'll see. Anyway, you could check the "For Sale" section here at notebook forums. http://www.notebookforums.com/forum25.html

Herein lies your problem though: If you find a 9860 for sale (shouldn't be hard), can you trust the motherboard isn't fried or going to fry soon? They seem to go DIE just after the warranty expires! Hence, my dilemma with to repair or not to repair. If you decide to repair it, call 1-800-669-1624 for the RMA (Thanks Charles!). I tried 3 times to get an answer to an email with no response.

On a related note, I thought Sager ran out of the 9860 Motherboards and were using different ones (I've read 9880's in some cases). If this is the case, how do you know what they installed?

Sager should be using all 9890 MB's now. There are other parts providers online, rjtech I think is one, but I'm not sure if they will give you the latest MB version plus a warranty on it. Furthermore third party prices are just as high as Sager's. Since buying a used 98xx MB from anyone is huge risk, unfortunately you might be better off buying your replacement parts direct from Sager.

Before you do that however, there is a small chance that it might be something else. Does the HD light stay solidly lit the entire time the computer is on? Do ALL of your fans work? Does the LCD backlight come on at all? You should notice a very slight brightness even though the screen seems blank.

According to Sager's tech support, they sell everything to users except for the LCD screen and the motherboard. Everything else you should be able to buy direct from them.

If it turns out to be a motherboard problem you'll have to ship it to them to have it replaced.

I am wondering if anyone actually tried the rjtech option - buy a d900t mainboard from them, replace it DIY, and it worked?

I am suspecting I got the same mainboard problem as many other 9860 owners... My 1yr 8mo old 9860 just started to have the exact some problem 2 weeks ago. I can still get into Windows though after enough on/off cycle (And yes, I noticed when the on/off cycle doesn't work, the LCD stays blank/off) - Although as soon as I try to do anything require CPU power (CAD/rendering/virus scan, etc), or if I use Fn+F2 to turn on the Fans @ 100% the laptop will freeze within a few minutes. I'll have to go through the whole reboot, on/off cycle again.

My warranty with Sager is already expired, and I don't live in the States, so it would be mad expensive to send it in for the repair + shipping. Not to mention all the approaching school deadlines... I can't really just send it off for 2 weeks+... at least I can use it as an expensive typewriter right now

OK, if your graphics card had died or was loose, that shouldn't cause your HD to freeze. I suppose your BIOS might be fried, but my guess is that the motherboard isn't supplying good voltage levels to the rest of the system which is causing initialization problems. You might be able to confirm a motherboard problem by visually inspecting the board. Remove all the backpanels and look/smell for burns.

If you want to get it working temporarily so you can back up whatever you might need to before sending it in... After toggling the power off and on a few times, try unplugging your powersupply from the wall outlet and let the laptop and powersupply cool down for about an hour. Then plug your brick back in and try turning your laptop on. If it doesn't come on, then remove the plug from the back of your laptop and plug it in again and try to turn it on. Repeat the unplug/plug/laptop powerup process about a half dozen more times or until it turns on.
