I have slimmed my serviced down greatly as well, like I said, I only had maybe 12 processes running when I ran my benchmarks.

I might try those drivers as well and see if I can get a little higher.

Also, how do I create my own bootdisk? I want to be able to flash my card to a 650 core, which isn't included in the bootdisk in the first post.

This isnt working for me. I had my card flashed with the GTX bios before my harddrive was wiped. When i try to flash it now it says error:GPU mismatch. There is no press y to confirm. Does anybody have a solution for this problem?
Taur,

Here's the syntax to bypass the GPU ID check:

nvflash -4 -5 -6 filename.rom

Note: The three numerical flags tell nvflash to ignore the mismatch. Simply substitute the desired ROM filename in the above command line and you should be good to go...

HELP HELP HELP!

Had my inspiron in my company for about 4 hours, flashed using the main .iso with the nvflash -4 -5 -6 v600c800.rom command as was told i had a GPU mismatch error and now the bloody thing's bricked.
I've flashed before on many a desktop but this is my first laptop, sometimes it'll get to windows, i can tell due to the sounds.

any ideas?

Some info might help, how long from power on do you have until the dell flash screen appears to press F12? (baring in mind you can press F12 before the prompt while the loading bar is displayed)

When in cd boot mode, does it revert to H/D boot after a reset? and what are the key strokes to get back to h/d boot if not.

This might help.

cheers

Right, had a fiddle, got it back to stock.rom, can anyone tell me if dell techs will be able to tell the difference from the original (pre flashed from Dell) to this one labeled stock? The laptop is still bricked.

Here's how i went about it, from power off:

Power on, when num lock lights up, tap f12 every half a second for 20 seconds, then press down, then enter, this will enter boot from cd, count to two, then quickly hit down and enter again to go to max memory option. Listen to the drive and watch the drive LED, you'll know when you've got it, wait 3/4 seconds and hit enter. wait until the drive settles, then enter the cmd string to flash as explaned elsewhere. wait for a few moments, around 20 seconds and hit 'y' (for some reasonthe wait is longer flashing to stock than other roms) You'll see the num, caps and scroll lock flash in succesive order while the rom is flashing, you should laso get a beep when done.
Now from this point I've been entering 'y' then enter, then ctrl, alt, del for reboot, but still no joy. There's something not right about that last bit, but the rest i'd say is spot on as it's exactly how i remember is from before.

hope that might get some of you out of a scrape.

Booting with the ISO question...

Hey there....

This might seem like noob question from someone who is willing to flash his 7900go card.

I burned the iso disk. I have an external cd/dvd drive (USB) because I added a second HDD in place of the cd/dvd my 1705 had. I tried to boot with the external cd drive, but no joy. I went into BIOS and made sure that it was allowing to boot from a USB or CD drive and still no joy.

Anything I should try/do? Can I boot from a USB key? If so, how/what files from the iso need to be on it?

Thanks for helping this knucklehead out...

Steve

Hi there,

I have recently got a Dell Inspiron 9400 with a geforce 7900GS (1 week old now).
I tried to flash the firmware of my 7900GS with a vmodded version of the GTX, (v600c800.rom).

When i finished updating i turned off my laptop and started it up again.
My screen went black and no picture was coming up when i booted.

Luckely i made a backup of my original firmware and i know now how to blindly update my firmware.
When i put back the original firmware evrything was fine again.

I tried other firmware versions even the modded 7900GS ones (ie. 5001050.rom) every one i use i gat a black screen after boot.

Is there some change in hardware maybe that causes this on my laptop?
Does anyone have an idea how to get the firmware updat done with my laptop?

any ideas would be helpfull.

How about you post your bios on this thread so others can look at it. (ie... so we can download it and look at it with nibitor)
There may be something new/different with your bios.

Okay i've put my original bios file and the working modded biosfile in the attachment.
(rename these from .txt to .rom!!)

I've been modding this file with these settings:

original.rom = 375 core and 507 memory and 1v. 3Dmark 05 score = 6376 points

to:

v550600.rom = 550 core and 600 memory and 1,24 v 3Dmark 05 score = 8616 points

saved it and flashed it.

I tested my laptop with these settings (it starts up)
Atitool artifact testing... no errors after 2 hours testing

I'me going to stretch it more....
All this is done wih the GS firmware so no GTX model firmware.

Driver version = Xtreme-G mobile XP 97.44 G3

Ok, I don't have too much time to look at it now (as my baby just started to cry so I need to take care of him).
But, the first thing I notice is that your bios is a newer version than the ones I have been working on (yours is 05.71.22.28.01 and the ones I have been working on are 05.71.22.16.13).

Will look more into it later.

I seem to have the same problem, I just bought my 9400, I tried to flash its bios with v600c800.rom and when I restart I got a white screen, sadly I didn`t backup my bios before the operation. Now I will use your bios to flash it , which I am hoping will fix, otherwise this baby is going back to dell for warranty .

I noticed that your new BIOS has a higher Board ID: 137 on yours versus 133 on mine (from august 2006)

Also the Temperatures tab shows different info. Your bios has no throttling and fan boost set. And the Core threshold / ambient threshold are switched: 104 deg C / 102 deg C on your bios versus 102 deg C / 104 deg C on mine.

So apparently Dell had made changes to the PCB and had disabled throttling. I assume it is not safe (or usefull) to flas the new BIOS onto the older boards.

Can anyone shed some more light on this?

Hi there i hope the firmware i provided will solve you blank screen. Needless to say is make a backup yhe next time . Anyway .... i've been experiencing some boot problems with this firmware i modded (550600).

Sometimes it boots in windows and hangs when you want to log in.
I don't know if this is due to the modded firmware but i'me gonna find out.

Any info much appreciated.

Well, new bios revisions, eh? This is unfortunate for new users, and old users still eager and without much knowledge on the subject!

However, a new VID question for the ORIGINAL BIOS REVISIONS of the 7900GS:

Alright, this is driving me nuts.
I've a e1705 and a 7900GS.

Now, what VIDs in the bios control the voltage?

I've heard :

6 is 2d, 7 is 3d

3 is 2d, 7 is 3d

AND

3 is 2d, 7 is throttle, 4 is 3d

Is there even a third throttle VID option for the GS?

What is it?!

Ben
