7900GS + GTXBios = 7900GSX - Page 42

There is a copy of the GTX bios in the stickied thread here and you can use either the fact that its unlocked or you can edit it with nibitor to achieve the clocks you want.

Does anyone know why the new Dell 1720 series notebooks are using the 8600M GT?

because of Vista and DX10 and the Macbooks are using them.

Guess I should have gotten right to the point. Does the 8600M GT have more horsepower than the 7900 GTX OC'd to 600/800?

from what I have read thru a quick google search it seems the 8600 is about level with the 7900. But if u don't care about DX10 in yer card then get the 7900.

The 7900 definitely is a great card, but keep in mind it can't actually drive most games at that high resolution (1920x1200). I have a 22" LCD and run most of mine at 1680x1050, and even then in games like BF2142 I've got to crank all the other settings to low for a smooth frame rate. It also works a lot better in XP vs Vista, I would recommend dual booting or not using Vista at all if yer gonna be gaming. I think that's a pretty common (if not obvious) consensus though.

Well, I've already got the 7900GS dual pipe, so I'm not card shopping. I was just on the Dell site looking at laptops for a family member. What then is THE BEST card one can own for an e1705? For pure gaming, that is. After seeing those 1720's, I honestly feel like an ass for not waiting a couple of months to buy a laptop.

The best card officially supported is the 7900gs. The best card that will work for it is either the 7900gtx or the 7950gtx.

Yeah, I can't even find an 8700M GT for sale anywhere.

going for a high score?
I don't know what I'm doing, really. And I especially have no clue how the top two broke 10K. If I go anywhere near those clocks, ATITool artifacts like hell. Are they using dry ice to cool their GPU's or what? What is Reaver using to get that score? How can he not be artifacting?

Cards arent created equally. While you are trying to get 10000 there are others that would die to have your score. My 6800U runs perfect at 560/650 but if you look at some old posts, there are guys (particularly shoman24v) that say that even 625 core is "impossible" on stock cooling.
Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with that score. Is upping the voltage a dumb idea? Won't that stabilize it at higher clock, kind of like upping the v-core voltage on a CPU? Truth be told, I need to stop benchmarking and start playing my games. That's what I bought this laptop for.
Yeah, but I suppose one benchmarking run doesnt hurt...I typically only take stock benchmarks and then if I get bored enough, I take some oc'ed ones

Btw, you're doing nice...My stock ultra gets 5300 and oc'ed gets 6657...The 7950 gtx stock gets 9331
post #839 of 1054
So do you OC the 7950GTX in the same fashion as the 7900GSX? Flashing different ROM's to it? I am buying one next month, and there's somebody in the forums looking for a 7900GS, so I may be able to recoup some of the cost. People say that an OC'd 7900GS is just about the same as a 7950GTX, and it's not worth the money. The 7950GTX has more pixel- and vertex-pipelines, double the memory, and more than double the current consumption. How the heck are they almost the same? Shouldn't have much trouble breaking 10K with it, and maybe I won't have to dumb down my graphical settings so much. The extra memory goes ONLY to running better at higher resolution? Is that it's main function? I guess I could read up on how a graphics card actually works.
I doubt the difference in power consumption is high, especially since you are drawing progressively more current with higher clocks on the GS. I would definitely say its not worth it though.
