esd event killed my USB

anyone have any ideas what they use to protect from ESD events? What type of diode should I look for?
I get 5V on USB, but when I plug in USB device my laptop (6510GZ) doesn't recognize it. Any suggestions?

check ur chipset drivers and xp uptodate
