My Alienware Letdown

I just opened the black box with my new Aurora. Looks sweet. Started fine. However when I loaded Battlefield 2142 and played it for the first time it lagged really bad. I downloaded the latest drivers, made sure the SLI was enabled and still the same thing. I also downloaded the latest patch from EA. Nothing and nothing. I even have the settings for the game set pretty low. I figured dual 256 mb GPU would cut through it like warm butter. Are my settings messed up? I talked with Alienware support guy who was nice named Sebastian. We reloaded the drivers again and still the same thing. He then mentioned that I should download 3D Mark and test it on my computer three times. Also try two other games and see if they will work. Uggghgh. I wanted this thing to play BF. I am surprised AW markets this game for their system and I cannot even get it to run properly. Bullet in the brain pan. Any ideas

Quit being so negative, the game was marketed for the system because it can certainly handle it. Do what the stupid people from Alienware say, and if that doesn't resolve it, I'm sure they will be more than happy to fix your system.

My m9700 plays the crap out of BF2, even with a single card. I've played the BF2142 demo and it works fine also...

Make sure your system is running with both video cards. Go into the advanced properties, shut off SLI, click apply, then re-click SLI and click apply again.

While there, set the global settings to advanced and move the performance/quality slider to high performance.

Make sure when you load the vid drivers that you do so for both cards.

Reload the SLI chipset driver.

Make sure BF2142 is patched to the latest patch, and go to their forums to see if anyone else is having issues.

Have you tried playing it with a single card?

I did have a little bit if trouble with BF2142 - I had to do a little tweaking. I still get some craziness from time to time, but I really believe it is because of the software. My m9700 rulz bf2142 - as yours will once you get the problem pinpointed.

It is a fantastic game - it really does seem like it was built for this system. What are your video settings? Have you tried disabling the VOIP - that actually was what was causing all of my problems...

I only had ONE problem with BF2142 with my M9700 and that was solved by disabling VoIP. Other than that BF2142 kicks ass on the M9700. Something is probably wrong with your setup if it isn't playing it right.

I just have a single X1800 in my Alienware, and it has zero issues playing BF 2142 under full settings. There must be something wrong in the configurations.

Thanks for the replys. What is the VOIP? How do you play with a single card? Sorry for the dumb questions.

Voice Over Internet Protocol - It is on the settings screen - you can disable it there.

To play with a single card you have to disable the SLI on the nvida control panel. There is a SLI enable check box that you have to uncheck...

No luck. I spoke with someone else at AW. We think either both GPU's are broken or the black SLI wire connecting them is defective. I am getting 3D scores of about 3000. SM2.0 Scores of 1700, HDR 2023, and CPU score of 450. Any thoughts. It seems like it is running the graphics only on a processor. My old 128 MB card ran stuff faster in BF2.
