firewall ??

Hi,
I hope it is ok to post this question here. I have a new laptop and I have a question... I know it sounds like a elementary question, but I don't know where else to ask it.

What exactly is a firewall?

Is Norton Anti-virus enough protection for people that use the internet alot?

If you can, tell me what firewall is a good one to purchase and where I get it.

Thanks for your help,
swede

The firewall is a program that prevents unauthorized users from gaining access to your computer whether it be through internet, wireless newtorking, etc.

Thank You so much..... jadams you made it sound so simple. I have heard they can cause alot of problems using them and trying to access certain web sites. I am going to go ahead and purchase one. Do you use the default settings? is there any helpful hints to using a firewall... I am going to the link mavario suggested ... Thanks for helping.

For the most part I use the default settings but some I do modify a bit. On some of my discussion forums and my online college classes websites it messes with if I set the cookie blocking or pop up blocking too high. You just have to tinker around with it a bit. After you get your's set up go to: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and test your firewall.

I'm really glad I have my firewall now. Last week alone I got hit with 8,212 attempts to access my computer in about a 30 minute time frame.

If you have XP then you have a basic firewall (it blocks inbound, but not outbound) built in. It can be enabled on the advanced tab on network connection properties. Personally I go for the hardware firewall and have a PIX.
