can this card be updated with drivers from nvidia's website?
Sure it can. Why wouldn't it?
no, it can't.

The stock drivers from NVIDIA don't support the mobile cards as released. You can use the drivers here but you need to download the modded .inf file for it to recognize the hardware properly. Make sure not to load up a 64-bit driver unless you're running vista.

Really? That's strange, you'd think nVIDIA would have drivers out for all of their card. I guess not.

AFAIK ATI Radeon drivers are the same way. At least when I tried to update the vid card drivers for my woman's laptop, her ATI card wasn't supported by the stock ATI drivers from their website.

For both ati and nvidia you can use drivers from their website but you have to go to mobility for ati or go series 7 drivers for nvidia on the website. laptopvideo2go.com or extreme g drivers are usually newer (maybe alittle less stable)

i thought that i'd read that it could be updated from nvidia's site but i can't remember for sure...

Q: Does NVIDIA support notebooks with UDA (downloadable drivers)?
Yes, NVIDIA has always been able to support notebooks with the unified driver on nvidia.com/nzone.com, but our Tier 1 OEM partners have always required that we direct customers to their Web sites and disable support for their notebooks in our unified driver. However, NVIDIA does support OEMs/SBs who request that their notebooks be enabled in our unified driver. For example, most of our launch partners are enabled on our Web unified drivers (Sager, Falcon NW, Voodoo PC, ProStar, and others).

so what's tier 1?

My understanding is that the Go 7xxx series will be included in the INF straight from Nvidia. The Go 6xxx series were the last ones that you have to go to laptopvideo2go and get the modded INF file to be able to use the lastest and greatest drivers. I think this is a great step, since Dell never seems to support drivers for laptops more than a few months old.

If you go to a site like www.laptopvideo2go.com, the link you see to the driver is actually the normal Nvidia driver. All those folks do is modify the INF file which tells the driver which video cards it can be used for. But don't forget to actually download the INF file too and replace it with the old one. I have the Geforce Go 6800 Ultra in an Inspiron XpS Gen. 2 and the optimal driver for me is the Nvidia 84.63 which installs great with the modded INF in place.
