Random Frame Drop

Hey all, I have had a Sager 9750 for about 6 months now. Everything is running fine, I'm just concerned about one issue. I play World of Warcraft and I usually get about 40-60 frames most of the time. But for the past two months there will be periods when my frames will drop to around 15 for a short period, then shoot back up. Could this be a heating issue?

my specs are...
Sager 9750
AMD Athlon 64x2
Geforce go 7800 fx
1 gig ram

~Bump~ Ohhh and I had sent this computer in already once, and I believe it was because of a heat problem.

Stab in the dark here...

Do you use a laptop cooler?

Have you cleaned all the intakes and vents?
(I clean my 9890 about every 2-3 weeks w/ can-o-air , ect..)

That design used on the 9800 series and 9700 series lend themselves to heat issues very easily. My opinion is that any owners of these laptops need to take that extra step in cooling it over OEM expectations.

Ill give that a shot. ty

I completely disagree that the 9750 has heat issues. I have had the issue you describe Lv84... I'd play WoW and the frames would just randomly drop for about a minute then shoot back up. I have a feeling the video card was throttling itself. I don't think it was a heat issue because my temps never made it to worrysome levels.

I think it's either a driver or windows issue. I had actually switched over to linux after I was having those problems and the laptop worked perfectly fine. WoW had absolutely no slowdown issues and actually seemed to run a bit cooler.

So my suggestion, if nothing else works, try and reinstall windows and see if the problem persists. If it does then you know it's a hardware issue. You can troubleshoot things like this for ages and get nowhere.

Bigtrouble is correct, the throttling issues can happen on any system and I have seen it before. Sometimes a simple driver reinstall or even change will solve the issue. Have you tried any aftermarket drives like the ones on http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ If not give it a try.

Accually, I did just reformat my computer and reinstall windows an such. but I still have the problem. As for the drivers, I do try to keep them up to date, but I havent tryed that site yet. will give it a go..

Ok, at least you eliminated a bunch of variables now. If you don't have CPU throttling working you will have heat issues because these machines are not meant to be running full steam 24/7. Install the new video driver, install the via hyperion drivers and give WoW another shot. If you still have issues then you need to open the machine up.

It's most likely a hardware issue if you're still having slow downs... I would try and open the machine up and clear out the dust and, if you have some, re-apply arctic silver to the cpu and gpu (if possible). Sometimes pockets can form and severely decrease thermal performance.

I'm experiencing something like this now as well.

Things will start off running fine, and then you'll hear the sound stutter, and the performance drops signficantly for a bit (about a minute or two) before shooting back up. I have a feeling that everyone is correct about the throttling, though, as the sound you hear when this occurs is the same as when you pull the power plug (and it switches to battery). Performance is the same as well. So, basically, the system is cutting back the CPU (at least it seems that way). Heat related?

I've tried to clean out the fans and such, but am uncertain how to REALLY clean the system out properly (I recall a process involving the removal of the heat sinks and whatnot). Any ideas?

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I was having the problem a lot untill I turned down my settings a bit(lowered Res and color), that accually helped prevent it from happening more. As for the drivers, I installed a new one from the link posted above. First I removed my old driver then installed the new...and so far I havent had any problems.

Uh, are you aware you can uninstall XP updates? You can make them show in add/remove programs, and uninstall them like regular software.

I have been having the same problem. I thought it was a heat issue but it is not. It only happens with new next gen games. This happens with my 9720. I was just playing tomb raider legends all maxed out. And around every 10mins the framerate drops so badly for about 1min. I tried changing the RES to 1024X768 (From 1600X1000) And I shut off AA. Same thing kept happening.

I am going to try the drivers from laptopvideo2go and hope it works. Sadly I find sager more and more unreliable as time goes by. It seems like they just stopped updating their video drivers for 5720 I paid 2,600 for this laptop, they should support it at least till the 7800GTX is considered a bad card. Also their laptops produce way to much heat. (I need to have a fan on the damn thing when gaming)

edit: Great that didn't work..
