What're the current "Got to have" notebooks?

About 1, 1 and 1/2 years ago, I was cruising these forums and the laptops everyone was envious of and anxious to get were the Asus Z71V and the Acer 8104 (8204?)

I bought a Z71V and never used it as a laptop (always plugged into my LCD/keyboard/mouse) and didn't like the screen sparkle so I sold it and have used a desktop since then.

Now however, I am in more of a position to use a laptop vs a desktop and would like an idea of what is really good right now.

I am looking for something similar to what the Z71V and the 8104 were about a year ago, that is, pretty cutting edge but not overpriced, with good battery life, a great video card, and not behind the times on FSB/processor.

I'm interested in 17" but leaning towards 15.4". Not looking for a huge 10lb brick. Will probably plug in most of the time but still want good battery life.

Would like to configure it as much as possible too.

MMM K thanks.

As far as ASUS 15.4" look at the S96J, it is customizable and Gentech now offers an $85 paint job making it even more customizable.

yeah that...actually i'd push for the Z96j for the higher res screen / minor cosmetic differences. both great systems though. something else that is direct competition is the Compal HEL-80, little less sleek looking, but offers an nVidia graphics card instead of AMD (err...ATi).

as for the Z71v...when they were all the rage, my bro happened to have been going off to college that same time so i got him one of those... i personally didn't like the screen sparkle either, he didn't seem to mind it though, to each his own i suppose.
