A pirate copy is in use!

I received my brand new Sager 5760 yesterday, and I love it so far.

I do have one problem though. The BlueSoleil software that came pre-installed for my bluetooth adapter keeps popping up a notice that states the following:

"A pirate copy is in use!"
"BlueSoleil will run in evaluation mode!"

I tried re-installing the BlueSoleil software from the included utilities disk, but the problem won't go away.

How do I fix this. Clearly I paid for the software and am not running a pirated version.

I think the evaluation mode quits after 5MB of data transferrer. That is bad news.

There are a bunch of these complaints on the Bluesoleil web forum. There are a few people that try to explain why its happening, and a few others with attempted workarounds. I have not had this problem with my 5760 yet, so I'm grateful. One posted said thier's worked for 2-3 months and then stopped. Yikes!

Some folks are hating Bluesoleil software (rightly so, I expect). I looked around for a "beter" software and quit after a couple hours searching and evaluating 3-4 brands. Waste of time, I think.

I needed software for my bluetooth usb stick at work, so I (broke down and) purchased the Bluesoleil software - I learned its keyed to the MAC address of the usb stick - one single MAC for retail version. I found it simple to use and I'm able to share files from my 5760 and work PC easily. Not too expensive, either, and a lot of features. I really don't want to have to buy another copy for my 5760, so I'm interested in your progress on this...

Good luck to find a workaround on the Bluesoleil forum. Worst case you can buy a copy and register it to your 5760 bluetooth MAC address (no doubt not what you want to hear). Or, you can try to find another bluetooth software that has the features needed - good luck finding a replacement s/w if so.

I had the same problem. I noticed that it told me it was a pirated copy right after I allowed it to access the net. So my workaround was to uninstall, reinstall, and when it asked to access the net I told Norton Firewall to block it forever. It has not shown that pirated notification anymore.

Interesting news that Bluesoleil has gone retail (vs only OEM). Maybe that's why they told us to sit on our thumbs and spin while they fluffed their retail version. Scumbags. Aegis, hilarious workaround. jardo, give sager and bluesoleil a simultaneous shout. To keep your tet-a-tet to a minimum, include all your mac details, etc.

Well, I got a hold of Sager tech support. They are really nice, by the way. The instructed me that I need to open the back and write down the serial number from the bluetooth card and send it to them. They even emailed pictures to show me where to read this number from. Then, in return, they said that they'd be sending me a firmware updated (I'm assuming for the blue-tooth card). Once installed, they said that the pirated software pop-ups should stop. We'll see.

Fixed!!

Updating the firmware of the bluetooth radio with a new serial number did the trick. I had to re-install windows because they seemed to also have recorded somewhere in the registry that I was using their software illegally. But, now, all is good. No more 5MB limit!!!

OMG. Is that unbelievable or what? You were not only forced to reflash firmware of your bluetooth card due to a software problem, but FORCED TO REINSTALL WINDOWS. You have to be kidding me. Nice when companies accuse you of being a thief and force you to go through hell due to their own greed and incompetence.

Yes, I agree. You'd be even more astonished if you saw the email response from Bluesoleil tech support when I was trying to figure out why flashing the firmware was not enough to correct the problem. They continued to call me and Sager pirates and said that is why flashing the firmware wasn't enough to correct the problem. Fortunatly the first thing I did when I received my laptop was to burn an image DVD of the factory image that came on the HD, so reinstalling XP only took 5 minutes.

Would you mind posting their response here?

If you look on their website: "BlueSoleil was developed by IVT Corporation since 1999. It is one of the most popular Bluetooth PC software in the industry with accumulated order of 12M copies." So, its possible (I don't know) that this s/w was spun off or sold which is likely why the "current" owners scream "PIRATE, PIRATE, PIRATE".

It reminds me of when ERWin data modeler was sold by Logic Works to Plantinum and finally Computer Associates. I bought mine from Logic Works and remember getting legal threats from CA that I "owed" them maintenance fees. I said, "But, gee, I never bought anything from you a-holes". The ultimate moral of that story is the CA CEO Sanjay Kumar is now serving 12 years in prison. If it smells fishey, it is probably a bunch of BS, e.g. "PIRATE, PIRATE, etc". LOL. Sorry for spamming - but its also funny.

I'm curious if the "serial number" you provided is related to the MAC address of the bluetooth card. And, if so, what exactly is the "fix" provided by Sager. Because, one of the features of the Bluesoleil software is to provide network connectivity between devices. If its calling home (spyware) then blocking with a firewall may not be effective to prevent further problems. I hope you really have a fix. Good luck.
