Short Circuit/Video Card - Has anybody seen this before?

Thread Starter
I have an alienware 766/m5500 (ATI MR9700); yesterday, out of the blue, the screen starts flashing bands/stripes/random blotches of pixelated garbage - I think "oh god my video card bit it!" (see screenshot).

After playing around with it i realize that if i keep my laptop perfectly level (it was on a tilted Lapcool before), the problem goes away and the graphics work fine.

It has SOMETHING to do with the video card, video card memory, or its connection to the MoBo, because if i tilt it during a game, it starts doing the crazy "huge triangles everywhere" thing and textures/models get all garbled.

This seems like a mechanical connection problem somewhere, but where?? I took apart every obvious screw and clip everywhere, and the video card seems to be solidly attached, but I can't really get a good look at the mobo. Any help would be REALLY appreciated!

I'd bet it's the fan. Tilting the machine probably puts the fan out of balance so it slows, and the card overheats.

I haven't seen a replacement video module for months anywhere, so hopefully if it's the fan you can get another.

your card is artifacting which will crap out on you when you play any 3d game. You need a new video card.

It could also be a bad wire. One of our laptops at work the screen would look like colored static but when I opened it up and messed with the wire that connected the LCD to Motherboard it would clear up. Hope this helps.

What do you mean no replacement video modules in months besides the obvious. You can't buy a new video card? I have an alienware 766/m5500 as well that needs a graphic card replacement. Can't find anything anywhere. Ideas or just sell it off and replace? The laptop is in perfect shape and I can install anything and have the money to buy a new card. What is with the supply on theses cards?

The vid modules for the 766 haven't been manufactured for years. Only possibility is used or eBay if you can find one.

I think it's time to buy a new laptop...
