Hi all, im no tech whiz so i'll explain my problem the best i can. im having a display problem with my presario 2800, i was getting fine vertical lines on my screen yesterday, so i tried troubleshooting and the result was disastrous! what i did was i disable my ATI graphic card on display options. after restarting display was running at 640x480 and the vertical lines got from bad to worse so i tried switching back to my ATI graphic card but the there wasnt an option to do so anymore. worse still, i accidentally disabled the current graphic device. as of now my notebook boots up fine but with a black screen (i can still hear windows starting up)

pls help

oh man that sucks, I've never heard of anyone having this problem but I would say try to push whatever "F" Key brings up your bios/option for boot in safe mode ect. when you turn your notebook on. If that doesnt' work call Compaq/Hp or whoever provides you technical support.

Answering a few more questions might make it easier to find help.

1) Do you see anything while the machine is booting (bios, Win logo, etc..), and if so when does the screen turn black?
2) Have you tried pressing FN-F4 (hold down FN key and press F4) while you think Windows is started and does it change anything?
3) If you can see anything while booting, try this (from power off):
- Power on
- Press F8 key slowly, and repeatedly, should bring up a select OS screen
- Press F8 once more should get to option for Safe Mode
- Select Safe Mode and start WinXP
- Go into Device Manager (control panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager)
- Under Display Adapters make sure the correct ATI adapter is enabled, etc..

Yes I see the Windows logo, the screen turns black when at the point the desktop should appear.

2) Have you tried pressing FN-F4 (hold down FN key and press F4) while you think Windows is started and does it change anything?
Tried FN+F4 when I was trying with an external monitor, didnt help the same black screen appear

3) If you can see anything while booting, try this (from power off):
- Power on
- Press F8 key slowly, and repeatedly, should bring up a select OS screen
Tried this, selected the Safe Mode, a black screen turns up with directories popping up to a point it hangs there and nothing happens.

There must be a way to solve this, cant afford to reformat my notebook, just uploaded all my graduation photos and this happens...sigh

Take it slow and your photos should survive this just fine. (no guarantees though)

1 - Please be a little more specific on what you see in Safe Mode. Directories popping up does not sound like anything that is supposed to happen, but then it conflicts with a black screen?

2 - Do you have a WinXP Install CD that you can boot from?

If it's not some nasty worm / virus that got you then you might be able to do a Repair install on top of what's there. Your photos would survive unscathed.

.

OK, it sounds like the problem is in the OS/ the drivers for the display... Your bios and the Windows Logo screen showing is a good sign at least the hardware isn't totally dead.

1: Try pressing F8 ONE time to bring up OS selection screen ... as on some machines pressing it repeatedly will freak it out.... It that doesn't work unless someone has a better idea you may be able to to a restore of the OS, assuming you have your windows disc..

PS: Once you get the machine back up create a DATA partition.... you should NEVER put anything on the OS partition that you can't afford to lose.

ok i jotted the directories that pops up, they look something like this,

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(o)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\agp440.sys

by the way, this is also the last directory that appears before my notebook hangs.

what should I do?
