For those with a need for lots of high speed storage, Hitachi has released its new Deskstar 7K400, a 400 GB 3.5" HDD spinning at 7200 RPM. Its available in either PATA or SATA configurations. Check it out at http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103_2-5171944.html

They are supposed to be announcing a 2.5" version of approximately 300 GB next week.

So when are we going to start seeing these in our notebooks?

Apparently not as effective nor safe. The procedure doesn't really enlarge your drive, it allows the partitions to float so if drive c isn't using all its allotment, drive d can pick up some or drive e. But you can't load more data on the drive than the original drive size unless the drive has locked sectors the manufacturer isn't letting you use. In which case, you got screwed in the first place. Some manufacturers do sell drives with more physical storage space than what's advertized. Just a matter of the platters used.

Anyway, good luck with it.

Think about it, if the manufacturers could get more storage out of a drive for the same price, don't you think they would? I mean, why sell a 150 GB drive as a 80 GB drive? Why not sell it as a 120 GB and pocket the 50% increase as pure profit? Sort of like finding out your supposed 4 cylinder car actually has a V8 in it. Yeah, right.

Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe the manufacturers don't want to make money.

There is a thread about this somewhere here at www.talknotebooks.com and if I were you I would not try it. Marquis is right and I feel you and everyone else would do good to stay away from it.

If you are refering to http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103_2-5164605.html then you read it wrong. They are talking about enterprise drives that are 300GB (like 3.5" sata ones that spin at 10000rpm), and a new interface for 2.5" hds "The 2.5-inch drives are designed to use an emerging interface known as Serial Attached SCSI (small computer system interface). "
