Voodoo Envy

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum. I signed up because I was looking into buying a laptop in July this year. I'm trying to do as much research as possible before I decide.

I was looking at the Dell Inspiron XPS or the new Voodoo Envy m:780.

Are there any forums like this for discussing Voodoo laptops??

Any suggestions? The only one I know of is the official Voodoo forums. But this looks more general. If that is the most resourseful forum, then I'll browse through that.

I'm looking for reviews and pics of the new Envy m:780.

Thanks,
Lee

If you'd like to spend less money the Voodoo is the same as some others, just rebadged with a paint job

There arent that many Voodoo fans here. Mainly because of the overly exagerated price they place on their systems. Also because a lot of people here would rather save themselves the 1000 dollar paintjob to get a standard colorless notebook

Of course Voodoo notebooks are great... they look nice, etc. But about the forums, nope... no voodoo forums besides the official one that I know about. Besides that ... welcome.

Hi nuyork

I'm shopping, too, and the XPS and Voodoo are high on my list.
Now the XPS has dropped off until they can fix the massive problem they're having, so that leaves Voodoo.

What I've found is that the official Voodoo forum is the only one, and seems a decent place to get info. People post benchmarks, and are generally helpful.

Good luck from midtown,

I have a Voodoo and I think its groovy. But I have to qualify that a bit. The paint had a couple of flaws that need to get fixed, they sent a 2x DVD burner when I ordered a 4x and customer service hasn't been all that and barrel of apples. After a trip back to Voodoo I have I am mostly happy with and I like it. I don't use it for much my main laptop is a powerbook. Mostly its just for games and udating the firmware of my verizon wirless conection card. I like but I probably wouldn't buy another.

If this is so, please send me a link to another retailer that sells the Voodoo M:370? This is a sweet notebook but way overpriced. I would love to buy it from another source.
thanks,

Had some extra cash on your hands for your *gaming* notebook eh? And to think the PS2 used to seem like and expensive rig for gaming! Hey, we all need our "toys" though, right. Mines coming soon (check my sig), but in all fairness it will be used for busines and the like too. It just happens to be pretty darn good for playing games too!

So you will use your windows laptop for work, so what? My Powerbook was more than the Voodoo 855 was. I know I could have gotten a Sager for less, but not with the AMD 64 chil, but I've been down the Sager road before and I found it rather bumpy.

I second this request, i was wondering who actually made the voodoo machines

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure about this (I don't pay extremely close attention because I only buy more portable laptops), but I believe that the 780 = Sager 8790 which are Clevos?? (the ODM). If I'm right, I'm pretty sure I am about htat but someone correct me if I'm wrong I've heard nothing but extremely good things with www.pctorque.com for that. The only thing that would be different is of course different tech support, and no pretty paintjob. Might want to check those out first.

the 370 is not a clevo

I think Voodoo makes their own computers. That's what my brother told me, and my friend has an older voodoo that looks like nothing I have ever seen from any ODM (er OEM? I forget the meanings)

I am pretty sure the envy is a good deal lighter then most sagers..

sager would be on my list.. if they made a machine under 6 lbs..

Voodoo does not make their own laptops. Not even one of them. Go over to the Voodoo forums and you will find a thread that explains who makes each model (somewhere, their seach is broken).

I recently bought a Voodoo 460 and was not happy with it. It turned off without warning when the battery was full, the trackpad buttons were so stiff i literally had to push down with my elbow weigh. And there were 4 dead pixels. Back it went, and I have since gotten an IBM T41p which is cheaper by several hundred and suffers from none of the problems mentioned above.

I will post a review of the T41p soon.

Btw, Voodoo claims 100% satisfaction. But they will try to stiff you with a restocking fee of 20% if you return your notebook, even if it shipped defective, like mine. I had to call my credit card company to ensure I got my full credit back. IBM has a 30 days, no questions asked policy.

The Voodoo m:855 is the Mitac 8355.
The Voodoo m:750 is the Clevo D470P, otherwise known as the Sager 4780.
The Voodoo m:780 is the Clevo D870P, otherwise known as the Sager 8790.
The Voodoo m:460 is the ECS 556 (previously the ECS 552).

No one knows who makes the m:370, but rest assured that Voodoo is incapable of making their own laptops.

Rest assured if you don't buy one. But if you buy one, don't rest assured.

I should say one other thing about Voodoo. Their fans on their site are honest, but not objective. Big difference. They have a lot of problems with their laptops, but they will find a million excuses as to why its ok that they accepted a machine so riddled with trouble.

Thanks to all...

Thanks to everyone who posted about the Voodoo notebooks.

I will have a look on the Voodoo forums for further insite.

But it looks like not many people on this forum like Voodoo that much.

Now I'm leaning towards Sager, but I'm not sure about them. I will have to do some research. I've never heard of them before till I visited these forums.

I would get the Dell XPS, but they still have that heat issue. Then Dell also only have a 128MB ATI with 15.4" screen, where as Sager and Voodoo have got a 256MB ATI, with 17" screen. But then again everyone RAVES about how beautiful the Dell WUXGA screens are, and then I'm not sure how the 17" screens are with regards to blurring and the other problems that have run into 17" LCDs in the past. And I'm guessing they don't make a 17" WUXGA screen as yet? Or even a 17" WSXGA+ screen?

Each with their pros and cons.

Well I'm only going to be purchasing in June (as I'm visiting Vancouver end of July), so maybe something better comes out by then, at the moment I'm just doing some heavy research as I don't want to waste US$5000 or whatever on a machine that gives problems.

Yes, I want to get a "desktop replacement". I don't want a laptop to carry around in the garden or wherever with me. I want something to replace my P3 1GHz desktop machine. And I'm willing to spend upto US$5000.

Thanks again for everyone who submitted their ideas and thoughts, I will keep a close watch on this thread.

I like my 855 I just think that for the money spent it should have came out of the box in perfect shape and it didn't. Getting the wrong dvd burner didn't help either. I'm not sending it back because of their 20% restocking fee, over $700 in my case. I'll use it until it doesn't do the job any more and dump it then, or it might end up on ebay. I like I use it but I wouldn't buy another.

For the most part voodoo will give full refunds if the reason for return is thier fault. If you want to send it back I would suggest contacting them and talking about it before you assume the 20%(edit: apoloies, if you are assuming. If you have spoken to them then this is one of the few cases ive heard of)...they should waive that if its thier fault.

I, for one have had a wonderful experiance with voodoo. The m460 had problems but theyre now fixed by a bios released yesterday. Most of the bad press spawned from this models problems, which now seem fixed. If you work with them theyll be very supportive and helpful, but if you want everything perfect from the beggining I wish you luck regardless of who you eventually buy from (and in some cases with shoddy support after....)
