OK, got my card swapped out. The tech had to take pretty much the whole laptop apart. I don’t know if this is just because he didn’t know better, or if it was actually necessary (seemed like most of it was needed). This means the future video card swap has to be done by a tech; and probably is not going to come cheap. He was here at least an hour; add on travel time and you are not talking pennies…
Anyway, my system seems to operational again. I won’t really know until this evening when I can run some heavy graphics. One interesting thing is that my 3dMark went from 3225 (fairly consistently) to 3375; almost a 5% improvement. I wouldn’t let the tech leave until I completed this test; just to see if the solution was to put a “governor” on the GPU. It certainly doesn’t seem the case.
The only other item of interest, at least my interest, was the actual heat sink used. Essentially they use a copper bar with a “radiator” cantilevered off to the side. Never seen a heat abatement system quite like this.
