The packing list says it's in there but the only things inside of the box is an Airborne Express return packing slip and two pieces of packing foam. Thats it! Now I got to call Dell and try to tell them they sent me an empty box. Oh boy, this should be good.... stay tuned.

Can you see some airborne express driver trying to jam that thing in his 3 year old desktop--sorry for your trouble, but that is the first thing that went thru my mind. Have faith that once your xps is up and running properly--it will have been worth the trouble.

That may simply be the "capture box". If you're getting on-site service, the actual part goes to the field tech, not your address.

Dell sometimes does this; it is not out of the ordinary. They ship you an empty box and shipping labels with the intent for you to use this to return your failed part. I would expect a separate shipment that contains your replacement GPU. Since it is such a new part and demand may be fairly high, it wouldn't be out of the question that the M11 was delayed. Or, like Karl indicated, a field tech may be dispatched.

I imagine that you are correct.

This is possible, however, what scares me is that the packing slip that was attached to this box says that there should be 2 items inside: a return shipping slip and a M11 grahics card. The same packing slip lists only a single shipment number. I have no information that the actual card was shipped to a field tech. I have not been contacted by Dell, or anyone else for that matter, for scheduling a field tech on-site service.

edit: If I check the Dell order number that was given to me when I called for a replacement it says that there is only 1 package.

Capture Box

For what it's worth, my whole system is being "captured". I was told that Dell would ship me a new system, which currently is in the "test" phase, and i would ship them my old system in that same box. I think the same thing is probably happening here, with the box being used for the purpose of sending something back to Dell, not from Dell. Just my two cents.

I contacted Dell customer service and it does look like they messed up. Someone there packed up my video card replacement and forgot to put the card in the box! hahaha. At least I didn't have a hard time trying to explain myself. They offered to send another replacement right away - hopefully will be here by the weekend.

That is good news--hopefully you will receive it this time.

Looks like this will be my last post in this thread. I finally got my gpu replacement yesterday. After my initial testing it looks like my problem is solved - I played SoF twice for about an hour each time and no lockups! I also ran 3DMark03 for 4 loops and ran Aquamark a few times without any problems as well.

I don't understand why Dell won't let the end user perform the upcoming video card upgrade. The XPS service manual posted on Dell's site gives easy step by step directions with pictures and no special tools are required. It can be done in less than 1/2 hour.

First off, this is not an attempt to rehash my issue, or sarcasm. In all honesty I'm not certain why they will not allow this either. To get to the center fan which was considered user replacable, and they stepped me through it, I had to take off far more parts (mainly the palm rest which is a btch to get off) than what was required for the GPU. When I did all this and saw the GPU, I thought the same thing. It really wasn't until I got to the palm rest, that I encountered any problems. The top panel and keyboard were fairly clear cut and simple. I could understand if they were to say they would not trust the user to take it appart, but that is not the case.
