just got back from my apple store and bought my FIRST mac ever!!! (sorry for my (far from being perfect english) I am from québec... anyways this laptop is amazing, the only cons is the heat generated I guess from the cpu... it get pretty hot... not very hot, but hot...

feel free to ask question and btw it's a 2.0ghz c2d with 1ghz of ram, 80gig

Well if the heat issue wasnt addressed then the $899 refurb macbook ($1099 for black) is probably the better deal.

it's not a big issue, cause it's not VERY hot... but hot... also my last laptop was a dell m1210 with a core 2 duo, it was return cause it suck and the heat was much more worst than the core 2 duo macbook. IMO the problem is the fact that the case is small and merom gets very hot.

UPDATE

After 30 min on the laptop PLUG-IN... the left part under the macbook is EXTREMELY HOT... as an industrial designer I really dont understand how this thing passed the quality control - test group team...

by hot I mean: it's very uncomfortable to put my hand flat on the surface...
... I am considering a return... I am sad cause everything else is awesome and fast... what is the return procedure at an applestore... are they anti-return or comprehensive?

This is how hot the core duo macbooks get. Everyone learned to deal with it. You can return it within 14 days, but they may charge you a restocking fee.

I wonder if they put a draft N wireless card in the mb as they did in the c2d mbp.

One thing that many windows switchers cant understand is the heat (and the acceptance of the heat from other mac users). The notebook that my macbook replaced ran at about 18-22C but my macbook (at first) ran 40-80C and it was rediculous. And despite some peoples claims, Core2Duo's do not typically run this hot. The heat is due to Apple's choice to put design over function. As an industrial designer then it should be clear tat there just aren't enough vents in this thing. I installed a few apps and I now average 25-50C which is too hot, but blindly justifiable since I've really fallen in love with this thing. So run these apps and tell us what your results are. Core Duo Temp - A menu bar app that shows you the temp Fan Control - A control panel app for control of fan speed. Expect some noise. iStat Pro - A Widget that gives you quick monitoring to everything. If you're going to tinker, remember to get the coreduo temp BEFORE putting in the fan control just so you have a reference point as to how hot that thing is getting and how the fan control affects it. Good luck because it would be a shame (but completely understandable) to dump the machine just because of the heat.

unplug the temp is around 55-65 C

if the cpu is running at 2.0ghz it run around 75C

if you are willing....i applied some AS5, and got some great results...

before:
idle- 55-60
load 95-100!!!!

after
idle 45-50
load MAX 80

i did this because i was concerned with the top end temp, and man, i was super impressed. the macbook is not a hard laptop take apart. i had the most trouble the first time with the touchpad left side corner.

well worth the few dings i gave it. one thing, if you ever send it in, better buy some crap white goop, put it back on first.

still well worth the trouble

I am thinking of doing this cause I really love this notebook exept for the heat... I have two question

first: can apple know about this... is there a sticker that get cut when you open the case, of they will never no

second question: do you have a DIY write up of website!?
no, no stickers that i'm aware of. it's not like the various brands of desktop systems in that regard. it would have to be internal if they did have it, and then there wouldn't really be a feasible way to know if you the tech broke it vs. someone before u.

I did it... very easy indeed... the result are awesome.... cause the stock paste was everywhere on the chip, so I cleaned everything and apply a thin coat of artic silver 5 and the temp drop 10C at idle. BUT, the best thing is that the heat is tranfert thru the heat channel not thru the case, so the notebook feel much more cooler on my lap
post #15 of 17
im wondering why apple doesnt do the paste better themselves. would save a lot of returns/unhappy buyers.

glad you got her done. how do you like the core2 compared to the xps?

It's my first mac but ive always been a mac fan since my brother in the 80' had a Mac Plus (dont know if it was a canadian model)... and I am very happy with everything. it's much more well built than a dell, the design is very good at the exeption of little details that I dont like but still much better than anything else. I cant compare the macbook to my XPS 700 cause I dont do the same kind of work, my XPS is for industrial design software and gaming, and the macbook is for university class, photoshop, text, etc.

btw, as I write this, the macbook is on my lap over a thin piece of neoprene and the cpu temp is around 47-52C compare to 60-65C and on artic silver website they said that normaly after 200 hour of use the temp will go down another 2-5C... SOOO... this notebook rock even if it's still hot, but it cant be better with a core2duo cpu, an inch thin case and a single fan... so thumb up at apple and thumb down at the guys applying too much paste

ah, the canadian Mac Plus version. if i remember correctly it was billed as a "Mac Plus EH" w/ the laptop codenamed the "oot and aboot edition".
