Mouse LAG

Thread Starter
I have been playing GTA3 (well trying) and Operation Flashpoint, but both games seem to have a noticable ammount of mouse lag. and if you increase the resoloution on Flashpoint it lags up to a whole second (game runs smooth, just screwed mouse).

It does this with all the drivers for the Radeon M9000.

Any ideas?

Also GTA 3 runs fine, up till I reach a very built up area or the bridge, then the game goes REALLY slow and the mouse lags badly then

Any ideas?

EDIT: My system is in my Sig, but as its not showing, its a Sager 5660 with Radeon Mobility 9000 using the Cat 6200C drivers.
Lags with External Intellimouse Optical and the Touchpad. Tried dissabling the touchpad too.

The mouse lag problems I believe are independant of the GTA3 problem.

As I said, it does it with the touchpad as well as the USB mouse.

Follow this link

Check this out perhaps some help.Post back if \when you fix it.
I did a search for "mouse lag" and this is what came up.
Did this problem appear with the vid drivers off the 5660 CD version 6178?

Ok, went there and went through them all.

No fixes for this (I had already searched there before )

But, turns out Flashpoint does that on my desktop system to, so I am putting it down to bad programming.

The problem left now is GTA3 and the EXTEREME slowdown is bulit up areas. I looked around Rage3D but they dont seem to have any fixes that work/apply to me.

Cheers,

Try this

Ok but did you have this with the 6178 drivers? Or did you not try them before installing the other drivers?

If you are using XP do you have pointer shadows on?
Have you tried the mouse in the PS2 port?
Also turn off antialiasing
Turn down graphic details in game.

Ok.......

Shadows werent on
Not using Mouse anymore
AA Not on
Details on game made no differce.

I tried running it in 640x480x16bit

and it ran, basically the same as at 1600x1200. Slows down in town and majorly over the bridge (just a tiny amount less than on a higher res).

It looks like Anistrophic filtering is always stuck on though, as I can always clearly see things in the distance, but changing settings on the drivers doesnt ever seem to help.

Heres a SS of in town on 640x480x16. Can you tell is Anistrophic filtering is on or not, I think it is (use a program to zoom in, not MS pic viewer as it blurs it itself).......

Ok, this is weird.......

I tabbed back into the game after posting that and it was back at about 30fps (capped at that due to in game limiter).

Strange I thought, ran through town, still fine, got in a car and shortly after back down to around 15-20fps.... I thought, ill just that again, alt-tabbed back to windows, checked mail, went back into the game...... 30fps for about 20 seconds again, alt+tabbed back again worked.........

So, my point is WTF is going on?!!?

This is rediculus!

????????????

LOL

The marvels of modern electronics. I don't play GTA but in know that Anistrophic filtering will kill your frame rates for sure. Case in point in the game SOF2 the Anistrophic filtering is set to max by default, so when the game first came out everyone was crying "my frame rates are bad WTF?" Well someone finally figured out that the Anistrophic filtering was set to max, so turning it down fixed the frame rate issue.

Is GTA a Quake 3 engine run in open GL?
Is there a setting in the ATI control panel to turn off Anistrophic filtering?
What about in game options, can you adjust Anistrophic filtering?

I'm also not familar with the ATI as I use Nvidia based cards, but would like to learn more as I bought the 5660\W M9000.

Let us know how this works out.

Have you run this game on your desktop? If it ran better what is the vid card?

Right, I bumped the Res up to 1024x32bit and I get a constant 30fps (capped) untill the slowdown kicks in, Alt+tab x2 and its fine again, cept I cant keep doing that every 20 seconds.

My desktop runs SLIGHTLY slower, but it doesnt have this problem.

Desktop System

AMD Athlon 1.4ghz
nVidia GeForce3 64MB DDR (supposed to be better than the M9)
512MB DDR RAM

It does this with all the ATi drivers I have tried (the ones that come on the CD, 6200 and 6200C).

I cant find anything to stop it.........

Ok, here's my two cents.... GTA3 is smacked up all over the place on computers. My current laptop and desktop both have a heck of trouble with it when there is a lot of action on screen. My lappy is not a sager, but it's got the M7, and 512 ddr, and 1.6ghz. As far as I can tell, the problems show up whenever the game tries to read from the hard drive (cuz that's slow as heck, especially on a lappy with the 5400 rpm). They recommend defragging your hard drive frequently, but that doesn't really help all that much. My game runs great for the first while, and then it goes to 10 fps even with everything at the lowest possible setting. I know with the M7 you can disable aniso. and AA from the setting in windows... you might try that. I never did because I am now hooked on BF1942 :-) All I can say is.... I want a 7200 rpm drive as soon as I can get one for my sager (lol, when I get a sager...). Let us know how it works out though.

I was thinking of getting this game (GTA3). Should I bag it? Is it going to be playable/enjoyable on my system... It didn't seem like too much of a hog from the box.

I have the 8886, 2.53 yadayada...

Beebster: I have done some alterations to my drive to make it faster and thats no longer a problem. When the game slows down the hard drive isnt reading, it only reads very rarely and very little during the game. By the sound of it, you have the same problem as me, try alt+tabbing back to windows for a few seconds then going back.

It just sounds like some major incompatability problem with ATi cards.

Hope some new driver version in the future fixes this :/

I heard lots of people have problem with GTA3 slowdown when it first came out for PC (with ge4, ge3, 8500 etc). Check their website for patch, try use 'hacked 9000 driver' or you can always format and reinstall everything

btw, GTA3 uses D3D I think. So try updating DirectX also and turn off some features.

yEAH, GTA 3 is DX.

I have tried with DX8.1, 8.1a and now DX9, still the same, and the idea of turning off AGP Textures didnt work either.

Try uninstall GTA3, uninstall driver completely (look around google for program that removes driver), then use the 'hacked' driver and reinstall GTA3.

Just as a quick suggestion, try turning off the trails in the options screen. I've found that the trails are a big slowdown, and the screenshot showed the trials. GTA3 is really a big game, don't expect it to run well at high resolutions. I know I had severe mouse slowdowns when I set the resolution higher than 1024x768x16 on my desktop with a Geforce 2. Also try 16 bit graphics, 32 seems also to be a big slowdown...

As I said, the mouse slowdown plroblem isnt in GTA3, it was flashpoint, anyway.

I already said, turning everything off and running it at 640x480 and it still did it.

Must just be an ATi problem.

I forget whether this was mentioned earlier cuz it's been a while, but I got my GTA to work well by turning off "wait for vertical sync"... Now I have view distance up to max and 32 bits, but it's still at 640 by 480, but there is no slow down. Maybe that will help you...

On my desktop system I also have a mouse lagging problem with flashpoint... have no idea wuts wrong. oh well.

I ran gta3 on my comp a long time ago as well and it liked to slow down after a little bit of play as well... I was running it on my 1800+ with 512mb 2700 ddr ram and my ati AIW 8500dv card.
