Advice needed..

My wireless hasn't been working for a while now. Even though it gets the maximum signal and lists it at 54 mbps of speed, I'm still unable to get online. It said there was limited or no connectivity. (My sister with her laptop and my other family members can get online through ethernet cords) My router is a linksys so I go to their Q&A section of their site and they said that it is most likely the router enabling wep while my Intel 2200bg doesn't have it turned on. Does this seem like the most likely cause?

Also, if it is how do I turn the wep on my laptop or turn the wep off my router?

Try updating the driver. I've seen 4 laptops(with 2200BG Cards) where it would says its connected to a network, but could not browse the internet. Three out of 4 times, I updated the driver, found on the website, and restarted the comp, and it worked. Also check to see if you enabled the cards through: 1. a phsycial switch 2. device manager says its enabled 3. right click the wireless icon, and make sure its enabled Take your laptop to a starbucks and see if your able to connect to their free wireless. If it doesn't work, then its your card, if it works, then its your router. Without looking at it, Those are some tips that come off the top of my head. Also, what program is running your wireless? the Intel software or windows?

You can go into the properties and access the wireless profiles and edit the home profile(whatever it may be) and make it into WEP

I'm running the Intel Proset program. Thanks for the tips, I plan to try and go to my local library or Starbucks to see if I can get wirelesss at those locations.

Soulsaver - Well, I'm only 16 so my voice really sounds like I'm a teenager. I'm not sure if the people at tech support would take me seriously.

I've always had better luck letting Windows manage the wireless. There's plenty of posts on NBF from people that had bad times with the Intel program. I don't even have it installed on mine, just the drivers, which are included on Vista

Well, I have fixed my internet but now it's not very stable. My speeds keep dropping to 48 mbps, then back to 54 mbps. I downloaded the newest drivers and still it occasionally drops to 48 mbps every once in a while. (I know it doesn't seem that much of a loss of speed, but it's causing lag in my online gaming.)Any ideas?

Did you do a firmware upgrade as well? Might try switching to a less used channel (6 is the most common) and keep the line of site from the router to the wireless card as clean as possible. Radio waves don't like solid walls and angles.
