S96J Memorycard port?

Greetings, yet again.

This is not so much a problem as it is to satisfy my curiosity.. I noticed a port on the front of my S96J used for reading memory cards (from digital cameras). It wasn't until recently that I found an old chip that fit the port, but now I'm wondering as to how I might make use of it.

What I mean is this: I can't find, anywhere on this notebook, any functions or even recognition of this memory card port/whatever. I don't know how I might be able to read off the memory card, since I can't seem to find any icon, program, or file relating to the sort.

And yes, I'm a n00b, forgive me, but is this what a driver would be used for? I've searched all over the Asus website, but it doesn't even mention the S96J model! Thus, I don't know what driver (if that's what I'm looking for) would be appropriate for this model. Suggestions?

it should have initials of the types of media it can read. For instance, my Z71v says MMC/SD/MS, which means it can read Multimedia Cards, Secure Digital cards, and Memory Stick cards. If the type of card you have matches with one of the types that can be read, then just stick in the card matching how the spacer chip was in there (match the "cutoff corner" and push intil it clicks. It should then show up under "my computer" as a removable storage drive. If it doesn't, then you may need a driver for it. You should be able to find one on your driver disk, or you can download it from Intel (since the S96J is a VBI notebook), Asus (use Z96J, as it's the same model), or Ricoh (who most likely made the reader)

Should say MMC, SD, MS. For flash memory cards.

It has the appropriate initials, and I realized why it wasn't able to read the memory card I had inserted (and why it had been so hard to remove)--it literally melted off the bottom half! I never keep the notebook on for more than an hour or two (since that's about all the time I have to give to it), so I don't know how it got so hot, or whether I should be expecting this kind of heat before inserting any future chips.
[edit]I figured out today that the "click" I thought I was pushing too wasn't quite far enough.. I didn't notice that you had to push it further to really feel the chip lock into position. So I'm assuming that by not fully inserting the card, it was stuck on something or something rather, and somehow melted as a result. Whatever the true cause was, I thought I'd simmer down the "omg it melted!!!111" post [/edit]

I don't recall ever seeing any removable disk icon (partially because that's the first thing I looked for when I thought of trying to find an answer), so I'll probably look for a driver. Which company would have the better driver (or would they all be about the same?)?

Oh, and thanks for the help.

If it's melting your card, either 1) you inserted something that is NOT MMC, SD, or MS (maybe you inserted a microSD?) and you're crossing some wires at the connectors, or 2) your card reader is faulty. I advise against any more attempts on your behalf until you find the reason.

How will I find the reason unless I try again? Yet, the cards are so damn expensive...

I don't suppose there's an easy way to open her up and see if it's faulty or not??
