Sony Vaio VGN-C1Z/B

Hi Everyone,

I'm in the market for a new laptop and am interested in buying a VGN-C1Z/B because it has the mobile geforce graphics.

Can anyone tell me if the 2mb 1.66 core 2 duo in the VGN-C1Z/B could be swapped out for a 4mb 2.33 core 2 duo?

On the sony US site the c series can be configured to have a 2.33 which leads me to believe this would be possible.

Thanks in advance

Marf

Oh well either way I've ordered it.

Hi, I have the same question as well. Can you replace the CPU easily like you could with the Sony VAIO SZ?

Well got mine through, very impressed so far, not had a chance to test the geforce yet with Halflife but I expect it should be fine.

It has 2 or 3 removable expansion slots on the underside which I'll whip off when I get home and check out whats what with it.

One of the panels is for memory. There is another one which gets very, very warm, and is right next to the vent. Perhaps this is the CPU?? Certainly hope so.

Could well be, I shall whip the covers off over the weekend and have a proper look.

Very impressed with the graphics on it, was playing halflife last night and it looks to better quality than my desktop with a radeon 9600 card.

Need to try something a bit more resource intensive tho.

Your right, the cover next to the vent is where the CPU is, whip it off and you can see the socket and heatpipe/fan arrangement, all easily accessible

Excellent, thanks for the help MrMarf. Now, I guess that means its impossible to upgrade the HDD, considering the other slot is for the Memory?

No problem, now just to get a 2.33 processor!

It looks like there is another removable panel on the front of the laptop, under the memory stick slot, I suspect thats the hard drive bay. I'll confirm and get back to you.

Cant wait to put in a new T7200 Processor, and then adding 2GB of ram just for Windows Vista.

Hi,

sorry to bother but i'm also looking to buy this laptop. My main concern is noise.

When only using browser, net, stuff like that is the fan on or off? in that quiet mode is the laptop in absolute silence except for harddrive ou the fan is always on but in a slow mode?

Have you tried listening music with headphones on, is the quality good?

thanks

Hi Cifroes,

the fan is on when surfing, but is almost inaudible, the harddrive is also very quiet.

Music quality is also very good through headphones, I've yet to try it through my home stereo though.

The fan never stops running? In AC mode and in battery mode it never stops running?

(damm... maybe I have to stick to my beautiful old centrino that is 100% silent besides harddrive noise)

Sorry my bad, I had only just finished playing some half life when I posted that

I've just turned it on for the first time today, surfed for about 30 mins and no fan so far

that sounds better were you on battery mode or AC mode ? [my current laptop is kind of quiet in battery but in AC it's a beast...]

AC mode

So, do you recommend it for a quiet operation while using light programs?

I would say so, to be honest even running Half Life 2 at full screen res, all graphics options enabled the fan isnt intrusive, its a very quiet cooling system overall IMO.

The 2.16 is several hundred dollars cheaper. IMO the premium doesn't justify the performance increase at all. A 50% increase in price for a 7% clockspeed increase... only reason is if you absolutely have to have the best.

Yeah you are probably right, I don't plan to upgrade for a while tho so hopefully the prices will come down.

Must admit though I'm a sucker for maxing out hardware.
