i am scared to unplug it now.

fux!
ok, I messed with it some more. put it back to a stock 7900.

seems to be working ok now.

I wonder why I couldn't oc it?

I did put some thermal paste on it. AS5, i don't think i did a good job cuz I didn't expect it to be permanent. just a quick fix test job. the plate slipped and slided around the die.

hehe, could that be why I can't oveclock>

thanks

3dmark 06 seems to be running fine @ stock.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

geeze, I now treasure my quadro 2500m!, I can oc it to 650 730, and still play games good. without crashing.

Why do you think I can't do the same with the 7900gtx?

I tried to play oblivion, far cry, @ stock speeds. lmao..

my OC'd QUadro is over 30% better in terms of FPS.

ok. I have found out the whole debauckle.

Here is how it goes.

Boy buys card off of ebay.

boy likes card. decides to overclock card. boy downloads iso with roms.

boy flashes. jauns rom for 7900gtx.

boy tries to overclock.

boy gets black screen.

I buy broken card off of ebay for 100 bux.

I flash 7900gtx original bios I found on nvision lv2g forum.

it works.

I decide to flash jauns unlocked rom 790gtxuo.rom

it works. I try to overclock 40 mhz.

I get black screen.

I beat my head against wall!

I get a flash bulb over my head.

I flash original rom again.

it works.

I use nibitor to edit rom and flash stock 7950 clocks.

it works.

it does 3dmark 06 5447 marks.

What have we learned.?

there must be another rev of 7900gtx's... cuz I have proved this to be the case.
okay, this is awesome. this card when I used nibitor and flashed it to 625.730 there is no artifacts whatso-ever!

she purrs like a kitten and idles at 38 degrees.

Cool now I have an extra card.

as soon as you put Jauns bios on it. the screen goes black and stays that way until I blind flash back to stock.

either it's a rev thing with 7900 gtx that jaun used. or there is something wrong with jauns.

I got this rom off of lv2go nvision forums, someone posted a stock 7900gtx bios

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=12291

all i know is that it worked like a charm.

I can't software OC. but I am stable as a recovered addict.

thanks zzpulp for pointing me in the right direction.

i might be way off base here.

tell me what you figure.

thanks

There arent 2 different revisions as far as I know. Both the ROM uploaded by you and the one from laptopvideo2go are the same. Exactly the same in fact.

Now if you want, I will modify the rom for you to unlock it as well as a few more changes.
cool, that would be cool

btw I wonder why whe I used the unlocked version of jauns. it goes funky.

yet when I just flashed 625/730 to the card it goes good?

thanks again.

I've never used any of Juan's roms so I dont know. I'd assume he did them all correctly since I have not heard too many complaints. I will make one myself later and if it messes up then I am not sure whats wrong. When I give you the rom, be sure to fc it with the command prompt to make sure theres only two bytes of difference. It will be a little redundant since I will be doing the same before sending it to you but its better to be safe than sorry in this instance.

ei guys, i need help here....
I read somewhere on the net that before flashing your video cards, you have to uninstall any overclocking utilities and return the clock settings to factory clocks....anyways...

I happen to flash my 6800 ultra in my XPS2 A03 with the same bios but with different id string or whatnot (I saw before flashing the darn bios that the numbers flashed in dos were not the same... the firmware version i think...)...
everything was successful, and I rebooted... I did not see the dell splash screen because I went out hoping that it would be a good flash... apparently it was not... the screen was flashing with different solid colors... and it filled the entire screen... blue... then green... then black... then red etc.... then I turned off the xps2 by holding down the pwr button... after that, it wont Boot anymore!!
its not posting even after pulling out the hardrive and leaving it on the whole night with only the boot usb... I also turned off the led lights so i cant say if it was really booting....

guys i need help, i cant do any flashing becfause my system wont boot... zzpulp has the same laptop but why does his xps2 boot and mine does not?? I can only think of one thing... the SYSTEM BIOS... sir zzpulp's bios is a05 and mine is a03...

i need help on this,... so my theory is that i have to put in a good video card, upgrade the system bios to A05 and see if the system boots with the old bad flashed video card.

im also having a hard time looking for a 6800 ultra or 7800 gtx in the net and in my country... but I know one guy who has another dell xps gen2... hope he lends me his gfx card...

need serious help here... is it still possible to repair my laptop? its my prized possession...

im in the philippines btw... thx

Trying different system bios versions cant hurt. Unfortunately, I have already sold my Ultra so I cannot help you there. Hopefully you can get this resolved easily. Going prices on Ultra's now are $150 - $200.

Other cards you can use (from least to greatest): ATI x300, ATI x600, nVidia 6800go, nVidia 7800GTX

The GTX is way overpriced though.

thanks for the rep....
my christmas became cold because of my laptop...
im currently saving up for a new gtx... worth $400 in ebay...

I don't want to get into a flamebait but I'd consider the 7800GTX an outdated card already. I would be hesitant to spend $350+ on it unless you're just wanting to play games using say the source engine. Anyway, good luck.

Hello I am new to the this note book forum. I looking for help like most people. I have a Dell XPS 1710 Bios version A07 using 7900gtx 512 Meg card. When I turn my note book on, I am getting hundreds of small green dotts covering the screen. It will continue to load into Windows xp. Then the screen is perfect, all the colors are back to normal i now can see my desktop and things look good. When I look under system propities, I find the video card has a problem, this device is not working. I then install the latest Nvidia Drivers, then my screen goes black. I restart the xps 1710 and pick last good config, then it back to Normal , but I still have hundred of green dotts on startup. I think I neeed to flash the video card bios, can some one help with simple instructions waiting for help. Thank you Colin from OZ

It sounds as if your card simply is dying/dead. I can't really advice you that flashing your card will fix anything as I doubt there would be any positive results. If you are still under warranty then contact Dell and explain that you are having pre-OS artifacts (on the system POST screen).
Thank you for the help, My Dell computer is 6 months out of warranty. So I guess I should be looking for a new video card, which are not cheap or just try and sell this computer as is. Question? do you always need to flash a video cards bios in dos. or can you update a video card bios in windows.

It is debatable whether a card can be flashed within an OS such as Windows or Linux but there are complexities that would occur by doing such. No one knows how reliable it would be afaik. Another key reason its not done in Windows is because it would most likely require you to refresh your graphical environment which generally requires a reboot in Windows.

Cards (that you would want) include 7900GS, 7900GTX, 7950GTX, Quadro 1500M, Quadro 2500M, Quadro 3500M. Both GTX's and the latter two Quadro's are pretty much cream of the crop for you.

Bad flash of Go7800GTX in M170

Hi Guys,
i also have flashed my go7800GTX in my M170 faulty. No Boot into OS possible.

At the moment i am trying to do a blind flash.
Have everything disconnected (HD, DVD) and try to boot from a USB flash stick which is prepared with everything needed to do a full automatic flash of the card.

My blue XPS lights are all on (so it should be posting) but no num-lock-led and no boot from the usb-media.

I gave him hours of time, but no access to the usb stick.

Is there still a possibility to recover it?
Can i force to boot into the OS?

Best Regards,
Anton

PS If i start with fn+power i get the symbol with "A" flashing and the one with the "arrow down" is constantly lit up.
Symbol with "9" is dark.

If you cant get it to post then yeah, you might have to look at other alternatives such as hardware based flashing (can't really help you here w/o chip documentation) or just getting a new card.

I hope you used an autoexec though because the numlock turns off once it boots something. Therefore, it could have been just sitting and waiting for user input. That's why you use an autoexec with the nvflash commands as well as say a "dir > out.txt" just to confirm if your autoexec ran or not.

Thanks.
I will do a hardware based flashing. I know a company which is doing the soldering and flashing for me. Hope this will work, because the data area of the bios chip is 2 times bigger than the bios file.
They burn the data at the beginning of the data area. This should be normal for graphics card bios. I told him to read out the data and to check where the specific bios data is stored on the chip. Then he will write on the same place...
We will see...
