Hmm I'd left the flash stick overnight on the book but the NUMlock doesn't light up and nothing worked again

Same situation here... hehe Looks like I'm gonna have to take a look for a new card on eBay Can't get the system BIOS to load at all... the screen doesn't even light up! scary

Phazon try it again with only the flash drive (its worth a shot)...it could be that the cd booted first and did not work...I have not personally heard of a case of the flash drive not working yet...make sure you use -4 -5 -6 as well as --auto -y....The first part is crucial

Edit: I'm about to just remove the bootable cd from the guide

Hi zzpulp, as I said, the system BIOS doesn't seem to load at all... No NUMlock key. The backlight doesn't even ligtht up which is scary...

I discovered that the BIOS I used was unreadable (bad CD-RW). If only I had another video card to test it. Hope the motherboard isn't dead.

I gave it a try with the flash drive last night (wiht -4 -5 -6 original.rom --auto -y), with no luck.

I'll try something else... like calling DELL and send back the system for repair

Little update of the situation: I found on Dell.ca (Canada) that you can run a diagnostic test by holding the "FN" key and pressing the "Power" button... The code I get: = Video Card Error Conclusion: The GeForce is toasted (physically?) Anyway, it won't let my system boot... hehe

I doubt its physically fried from a BIOS flash. I would look deeper into the blind flashing, maybe redo it, perhaps you mis-typed something.

The system BIOS doesn't load at all :P I really don't know how I could blind flash the video card if I can't even boot on a CD-Rom or Flash memory stick hehe

Mega-kudos to zzpulp for this info. I used the hpflash1.exe to create a bootable disk on my USB thumbdrive. I used IsoBuster utility to open and extract files from the various BIOS flash progs and put them on the thumbdrive. Rebooted onto the thumbdrive (LOVE that good old Win98 screen!) flashed my nVidia BIOS, and rebooted to my OS. Smooooth as the proverbial baby's bottom Thanks much.

Doh! Not set as a default RAR extension on my machine, thus no RAR icon and I didn't know it could do it. Nice to know, tho. Thx.

Ok so another problem solved...this wont help the ppl who werent booting to bios (unless nvflash 5.4 has some sorta timeout...arg another thing to test)...use nvflash 5.13 if possible (pretty sure it doesnt support 79xx series and might not support 78xx series)...I had never used nvflash 5.4 (i think its the version I linked to up top) and it likes to whine at you even when running -A (--auto)....so you'd still have to press 'y' a few times to confirm the flash...I'll update the guide later tonite probly
OK so I tested out all the nvflashes I could find and apparently nvflash 5.31 was the last version that doesnt nag you with -A...
So I'll try to figure out just what gpu's that version supports (just for me) and if you want to see if it supports your gpu you can run nvflash --list...

Sorry to sound like an idot but what exactly do I need to put on the cd i burn. I have a dell 9400 with 7900gs with rev.1

I flashed the rev.0 on accident how do I create a autoexec file? Is tehre anywhere to just download the exact thing I need to burn?

nope I havent made it as easy and straightfoward as flashing it in the first place (how ironic)...You're gonna have to make your own bootable device...Get a flash drive and use those directions in the original post...the bios you want is here: http://home.tele2.es/jlgm/Iso/JLMOD.rar (screw his direct link policy imo) and you want to select the one named 791GSUNN.ROM or 791GSUNV.ROM....follow my directions for creating usb bootable flash drive and use the line "nvflash -4 -5 -6 -y [biosname].rom" in the autoexec.bat and then youll only have to wait awhile and press 'y' a few times for the card to flash and your computer should reboot on its own
post #35 of 234
When I tried to use that file manually (blind of course) I kept hearing two beeps which I'm assuming was an error. I either typed it wrong or it was telling me that gpu was incorrect for that bios because i tried it on another system same exact thing 9400 with gs7900 and thats what it would say becaus eit had the older bios rev. 0

What Im hoping is that after putting the wrong bios on it in the first place that it may think its the older rev 0 and wont let me put the new bios on it. Sorry I know that sounds confusing but is it a possibility or should there be no reason why it won't take 791gsunv.rom

P.S Thanks for all the help from you guys..

That's exactly what its doing hence why I told you to use "nvflash -4 -5 -6 -y [biosname].rom" and then it will give you some warning message that you just have to press 'y' at a few times....and voila the laptop should reboot...

zzpulp, you are a f*ckin' legend dude....your helpful instructions just saved me from having to fork out £180 for a new 7900GS....have some fothermuckin' rep....thanks!!!!
