Blind Flashing and You - Page 3

Well, same thing happened to me as phazon or whatever his name is. I rebooted my E1705 7900GS after doing a bios flash based directly off of my stock bios I made modded ones for the card. I rebooted and the screen never came on and the system never POSTed...so Im wondering what the deal with this is, has anyone found a fix? my fix for now is Im sending it back to dell for repair...grr. Is it like maybe the newer SYSTEM BIOS's on the E1705 dont do a full post if the video card does not work or what?
This happened like the 5th time I attempted to flash the card....could it be because I tried flashing it 2x in the same session before rebooting the PC?? Cuz thats the only thing I did different from the 4 flashes before it.... / confused =(

This makes me scared to try and play around with it when I get the laptop back and repaired...just in case its a system BIOS issue getting to the card then stopping cuz it cant initialize video and not completing the post....Can you guyz or the OP tell me what system BIOS version you guyz were using?
I did see as an option in the BIOS something about faulty adapter detection...wonder if that happens to do with why its not POSTING...=(
If anyone has figured out how to fix this...let me know =)

I've seen no option like that in my bios...
I have an xps2 so I cant really help you with your bios...
Yes your bios does not post with a significantly corrupted eeprom...chances are you dont have a backlight and nvflash wont even recognize your gpu..."nvflash --list > output.txt"
You can get the system to post time to time just by rebooting and waiting like 20-25 seconds...if nothing happens, reboot and try again.
I tried to get a consensus on this at another forum but they just deleted my post so you're just gonna have to trust me I guess:
if you dont have a backlight you might as well try selling the heatsink of the card on ebay and using the rest of it for parts...

huh? lol my backlight aint broken, its just my system is not posting.
I dont understand what you mean by selling the heatsink of the card on ebay and using system for parts...lol I didnt destroy the system...or the card...Im confused.
can you tell me the version of your system BIOS though...I want to see if newer ones prevent it from POSTing when vid card error is detected.

You have a completely different bios than me...
I was thinking your card was completely broken but I guess not...
Since you say you have a backlight then you're in businness
Your system is gonna most likely take 45 min or so to post bc of your corrupted graphics card
Just wait it out
Make an autoexec as explained in the first post...

no I mean I dont have a backlight .... the card aint broke, the system just aint posting lol....but I dont have a backlight but the backlight isnt physically non functioning or anything...I thought you meant my backlight was fried or something lol.
No, I turned on my laptop using FN + PWRBUTTON and it did the same 2 left icons flashing and 3rd right icon steady asposted earlier in this post by phazon. That code means video card error.
So its like the system wont post simply because it cant detect any video output or something. Like its supposed to POST and just not show video output. like it does for allof you guyz, but for some reason me and phazon it wont =(

It is possible to ruin your card with a bad flash
As I mentioned in the first post, if your card isnt "generating" a backlight then chances are, you are screwed...so yeah, you're done
Like I said you can make it post if you try hard enough but even then nvflash wont recognize your card most likely...then your only option would be to find the SUB_VENDOR PIN on the card and flash it with the -j switch...since no one I know has found the subvendor pin you are pretty much out of luck

wow ok...I didnt know it could completely ruin a card lol. So, what do you think killed it? The fact that I flashed it 2x in the same session before rebooting?
I cant think of anything else that would have ruined it... =( like I said I flashed 5x before that once per reboot of course and it worked fine.

about the backlight you meen if the screen dont light up after a bad flash the card is dead?

because i didint have nothing on my screen no light or anything but doing the blind flash fix my card.

all i did is take my hdd out than when i hear 2 beeps i push f1 than it booted to the cd than i had to remember what to type like mine was nvflash 780gtxux.rom than the lights flickered than i herd a beep than i restarted and it came right on like normal

nope lol there is no post of the machine period =(
The drive lights turn on in their initial power on and thats it...nothing happens after that =(
no beeps nothing.

So I guess its the mixture of the 2 you dont want to have...a machine that doesnt post and doesnt have a backlight is the sign of some real problems...Anyway, even with these symptons I managed to get a 7800gtx (not mine) to boot only to realize nvflash either doesnt recognize it or recognizes it as an unconfigured display adapter that cannot be flashed...
At least try to get it that far so you can be absolutely sure your card is finished
Boot, wait 45 sec, if nothing, retry...have the autoexec ready with "nvflash --list >output.txt" and then read the contents of output.txt once the command is run

how many times did you reboot? Ive done it about 30x so far sometimes letting it sit for 3 hours...
This sucks though... how could flashing it 2x without rebooting mess it up this bad? like I said I flashed it successfully 5x before this happened =(

1 - with the broken, unconfigured card, my system would boot about 25-35% of the time and without a backlight...and max it took about 1 min to boot...Dead card

2 - with my card (6800u) with really bad rom (7800gtx hehe), the system would boot and a backlight would turn on and it would boot to a device after 1h 30 min...Perfect card

3 - with my card (6800u) with moderate bad rom (6800go hehe), the system boots as regular with backlight and takes like 20 seconds to blind flash...Perfect card

It seems as if your case falls into the first category I stated and you are probably screwed...you can interpret this however you want

whoops forgot to mention that...nah it doesnt matter how many times you flash before you reboot...granted the eeprom cannot be written to infinitely, its lifespan is quite large if I recall correctly.

well I dont know what the hell went wrong then lol every single flash said it completed successfully before I rebooted, even the one that I did that makes it not boot now =( said it flashed successfully...could it be the card was bad from start or something?

nvflash writes to eeprom's just fine, its just when you reboot the card and your card tries to use the rom that something could go wrong...
Not sure, but it may be safer after you flash the card to run:
nvflash -b temp.rom
nvflash -k temp.rom
Even this wouldnt be fullproof however, it just ensures nvflash reads the same thing from your eeprom when run more than once

you even took out the hdd GenTarkin1?

because mine whouldint boot either not even a beep than i took out the hdd than tried it and it beeps 2 times which i didint know what it ment lol so i had my backup card 6800go handy and pop it in and it said no boot device push f1 and it booted from the cd.

than i pop in my 7800gtx waited till it made 2 beeps than i push f1 and the cd light came on and i type in the imfo what needed i even used the new unlock cd to overclocked and it worked than it pop right on after i restarted

yeahp even took out the hdd =( nothing....this is so weird a card would die like this from a good flash and ROM Based on its original rom =(
