m9700 and Vista

So I've managed to get ahold of the final release of Vista and thought I'd throw it on my m9700. I managed to get everything working, including drivers, except for the Airgo MIMO WiFi card.

Has anyone else run into this problem? I can't for the life of me find drivers that will work in Vista. Is there a way to hack the drivers donloaded from the AW site so they will install? Maybe modify the .inf file (which I can't find).

Hopefully I'm not the first person to hit this roadblock!

Any updates yet? I'm curious about the m9700 performance in Vista...

i havent been able to install it, on my m9700 y did installed the final RTM version on my m7700, i manage to install all the drivers and applications are running perfectly, i had to download the drivers from Realtek site for teh sound but its working.

performance wise everything seems to be the same, 3d marks scores are only 50 points less or more thatn XP's and ive played BF 2142, BF2 NFS carbon, Fifa 07, HL-2, wOw and fligth simulator X with no problems, getting the same FPS as in XP or a little less in the case of the BF's but its still playble at max settings

maybe ill have time this long weekend TG for a long weekend to install Vista on precius i mean m9700

I've also got a hold of the final version of Vista yet I didn't bother installing it on my computer because of the requirements (mostly ram, i only run on 512MB which is kind of crappy) but I'm thinking of throwing it in when I get my alienware laptop but I don't want to run into problems after installing it.

1 Gb of RAM is the practical low limit for Vista and 2 Gb's is a much better choice. I've been running it on my 1705 for months now and it's been flawless. All hardware worked after the initial install, including the wireless card, which isn't an Airgo..
The one problem I've had is Sims 2. I installed it to show my daughter how much better the game works with a real video card as opposed to her onboard intel crap and it looked good, but there were quite a few cases of strange lines and other graphical errors.
Finding a memory card or thumbdrive that works with Speedboost is something you definitely want to do with Vista.

People said there was no difference with 512MB ram and 1 GB ram but I'm ordering my alienware laptop with 2 GB so it doesnt matter cause Vista will obviously work on it because you need at least 1 GB for it.

hmm, not sure how they couldn't notice the difference between 512 Mb and 1 Gb.. That's usually quite a bit of a difference in any OS. Smart choice with 2 Gb's though. That'll soon be really common and with Vista we can slowly move to 4 Gb's for the high end

4 GB is pretty intense. But yeah thats what I heard about the 512MB RAM and 1 GB RAM.

Ive been running every build for the last year.
In the last couple builds before the rtm they really cleaned up the ram usage alot.

That being said, it will run on 512, but dont expect to have too many apps or a serious game running without horrible swapping.
1 gig is about the 512 sweetspot that XP had, better for multiple apps and some medium gaming, but for serious gaming and apps, I have to say the 1.5 to 2 gigs is really were u need to be to avoid swap slowdown.

I'm getting ready to upgrade my m9700 to vista as well. I've downloaded all the drivers available on the alienware website. What about the GPU driver? Do we still use XP driver? thanks.

You actually have two options - you can grab the ones off of AW's support site, or get the ones from Nvidia (the new 100.59 drivers - probably a bit improved over the ones supplied by AW).

PS - The ones on the support site are somewhat hidden (they aren't listed under the Vista drivers for the m9700, you have to specifically select the drop-downs for video drivers and then the 7900GS Vista drivers will be listed).

Thanks! So you recommend the nvidia over the AW?

According to Nvidia's website, they don't have any Vista drivers for the geforce go 7 series. The 100.59 would apply for the 8800. So I'm going to go with AW's version. Would the 100.59 still work for the 7900 GS? ty

the 100.59 version wont work on any 7 series card that driver is only for 8 series video cards

You should be able to use the 100.59 (actually 100.64 just came out: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=13000)

You'll have to mod the .inf file to get it to install for a 7900 GS (see the link for instructions), but they will work and should be a bit more up to date than the ones supplied by AW.

I imagine AW will only support the drivers they release, so if you have any problems with these other ones AW support probably won't be much help (not that they are anyway, from my experience ). But hey, that's what these forums are for!

Does anyone have any idea, when AW will have the VIsta capable SLI driver for the 7900 GS? I've installed Vista on my baby and it's running faster then before!
