Severe drop in FPS (reason unknown)

I have a 9880 and I've had it for over a year now and everything is running fine, but since I can remember I've had problems playing all games. It was a small irritance at first, but it's got to me more and more. What I am talking about is a sudden and severe drop in FPS for no apparent reasons.

I will try and explain what happens as best as I can. In WoW or CS I will be doing my usual business. In WoW if I'm running around on a mount and a new animal pops on my screen my FPS will drop to 0 and a second later I will be 10 feet ahead of where I was when I lost FPS. The thing is, this issue doesn't happen everytime so I haven't been able to draw a real pattern out of it. In Counter-strike I will be playing fine and then I will see a new enemy and my FPS will drop to 0 for 1 second. In CS I also have this issue sometimes when I hear a voice command (the ones used with c,v, etc...) My screen will literally freeze for a second before it goes back to being the normal 40-60fps that I usually get.

So maybe my graphics card just can't handle it right? Well I thought of this so I lowered my CS to Low across the board and even tried playing in 640x480. Doesn't help, I still get the same drop in FPS. And when I play on high settings my FPS is always fine other than the FPS drops.

It makes counter-strike practically unplayable at times, because losing fps (basically freezing) even for a second can get you killed or make you miss an opportunity

If anyone knows what could be causing this issue please let me know.

Thanks!

maybe try new drivers?

I tried downloading new drivers, but that didn't help the problem. I suppose it could have to do something with the fans and overheating, but aside from blowing dust out of the fans (which I do about once every 2 weeks and it doesn't fix the problem) I don't know what to do.

is the warranty up? if it is u might wanna try something drastic. u can lap your heatsinks and apply some artic silver. i recently lapped my heatsinks (warranty was up) i figured i would increase the life of it a little let it breathe alittle better. when i lapped my video card heatsink i found that who ever applied the thermal compound did not do a good job of applying the stuff. it was alittle sloppy, i cleaned it up and applied new thermal compound. maybe thats your prob, the compund was not applied correctly and its not cooling properly.
i saw a good guide on lapping your heatsink in the forums.

I still have a year on my warranty, so since I am more certain of the issue perhaps I could send it in and have them "fix the problems with overheating" or something along those lines.

I will definitely bookmark that webpage though. Thanks for the information.

There is a program called "GetThermal" on the net somewhere that you can use to measure your CPU and GPU temps. However, are you sure it's not a connection issue? Have you tried playing the games in single player mode and do you get the same problems?

Yeah so while I play WoW my cpu is at 66 degrees. It's been chopping a lot more lately (random drops to 0 fps for .5-1 second) and it is getting really irritating. Not too mention my speakers crackle at random times now. I'm thinking I need to send it in, but I'm not sure what the real problem is and I'd rather have them be able to fix it as fast as possible because I need it for college.

I ran pcpitstop and I got a red flag for video card and my disk drive.

does it get really hot on the left palm rest?
did u do the bios upgrade so u can turn the fans on and off manually?
try and eliminate heat problems first.
if its not heat then it might actually be the vid card.
u said u still have warranty on it did u call tech support?

The CPU temp is 'acceptable' as it should be below 70, but what about the GPU? It could also be a HD or HD controller problem, main system memory, or maybe some other piece of hardware. Check the hardware in the Windows control panel and make sure there are no yellow warning signs. Maybe run a memory test and perhaps reseat the RAM modules, or try disabling hardware piece by piece in the BIOS or Windows.
