Acer 8104 screen is having serious issues

I've had this thing for a year and a bit. The screen is right now exteremely flaky. It will go all red, all great, develop green patches, get scrolling lines etc. If I flex the notebook around and wiggle the screen on the hinges, sometimes it goes away, but I haven't isolated the best place to flex it. If it goes away, the screen looks perfect.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas if there was a common problem for this, and whether I should try to send it in for service (I have no idea how Acer's non-waranty service is) or if I should try taking it apart and having a look inside. I've never taken a laptop apart, but I'm pretty handy.

A lose LCD connector or damaged ribbon perhaps. If you can send it for service (don't know how much it is) and can live without laptop for a while, perhaps it's better. If you decide to open it, it's quite an adventure. Especially because you will have to literally take it apart to get to LCD connector. It was easier on TravelMate 800 and 8000 series (just pull off the panel above keyboard). Then again, if it's just a matter of reseating the connector, you are fine. If wires are damaged, you'll need to send it for service anyway.

Well it IS a travelmate 8104. Does that mean it's one of the easy ones. I checked, and the manual doesn't have any detailed instructions for taking it apart, go figure. I suppose somewhere on the web is a guide.

No, the easy ones are TM800, TM8000.
Yours and mine - TM8100 - and also TM8200 require full disassembly to get to connector.

Sounds like another case of dodgy TM8100 motherboard. I sent my 8103 for servicing, they (Acer) replaced the MoBo (£600 if out of warranty - mine was on warranty, luckily) and everything is working fine since then (touch wood). It has been nearly a year since, now...
Try tapping/ pressing slightly area around touchpad (especially right side)- if symptoms disappear until you tap again then it can mean same problem as it was with my machine (and my wife's TM8101 also repaired while on warranty).
