Hi,

I am getting into linux so my 15.4 laptop is too big (yeh but i need smaller so i can use it better on flights) I have been looking into a 15" IBM Thinkpad R60e but i am looking for 14". I want good build, so no dell inspiron laptops.

Acer?
Asus?
HP?
IBM?
Compaq?

Which one? Intel Core Duo is wanted.

Asus, has various 13.1" laptop models.
They are usually of a good build.

I wouldn't touch Acer with your 10 foot pole. Their service is atrocious, I've had not one, but two Ferrarri laptops and they really don't understand customer service. I will never buy another Acer product again.

Dells are built just fine. They dont need to hold up to falling down the stairs, because laptops arent meant to be thrown around.

the w3j has a very solid build
the a8js has a better price (but an inferior build/aesthetics compared to the w3j)

I agree with the last two posts. The A8js if you want the best bang for the buck (Core2Duo, 2 gigs ram, 7700go, and 120 gig hdd for $1500) and w3j+ if you want the maximum aesthetic appeal.

I have seen the Dell Inspiron E1405. But i will get a 2-year onsite warranty. Yes i have had problems with my Inspiron 6000 but dell was there for support. And they were there to replace the parts in a 4 day turnaround. I might give Dell another chance.

There is no best, there is only best for your needs. So what are your needs? ASUS A8Js is most powerful with C2D, Go 7700 and A8Jp comes good second with C2D, X1700.

Man, no one ever seems to get it Right.

If they combined the W3V elements of modular drive bay, metal chassis, dvi out, and great LCD panel with the go7700 and 1440x900 resolution of the AJ8, you would have the perfect 14" laptop.

Again, there is no perfect laptop, and that would not be it (example poor batterylife, high price, etc.etc.etc...).

Have a look at HP Compaq nc6400. It's a fine business laptop for non-gamers.
