Thanks for DELL-Spiike. This was a great modding idea he brought.

Actually for the led mod you don't need to do soldering and you don't need the pin header, female pins, and 2pin connectors. Just wire anything by simply intwist each other. Make sure that you isolate the explosure by the
tape well.

Just one more thing, I did use the resistor for my leds because there's no such 5v led. I think Spiike's leds are high quality so that they last longer.

And btw... i have an idea for the trackpoint buttons...

Instead of using the washers, i simply cut some plastic out of on old CD Disc in the shape of a small square... and stuck it on the button with a drop of glue. An old nail cutter cuts the CD accurately... and the CD is about 1 mm in thickness.

It works great... Nice sensitive buttons

abhi, i dont' mind about the link, and I'm glad my mods worked out well for you. =)
I never thought about using a cd, great idea. I'll list things people used for that mod on the first page, so ideas don't get "drowned" in all the posts.

I'm also still researching painting, so if anyone has any resources for painting, i would be very grateful. =)

hey guys,

sorry i'm so behind on all this moddin' stuff, i'm new. Just ordered myself a 8600, should be here today or tomorrow. Just had a coupla questions though if you guys wouldn't mind helpin' me out. For the housing mod, i saw that the M60 and D800 housings don't holes for the buttons to the right of the keyboard on the 8600, do you just cover up those buttons if you want to do the housing mod? Also, is the 8600's top LCD lid the same material as the M60 and D800? I heard somewhere that the M60 and D800 top LCD lids were aluminum. Are the M60 and D800 housings exactly the same? If the 8600's top LCD lid isn't aluminum, would i be able ta just buy a M60 or D800 top LCD lid off of ebay and just change only the top LCD lid? Any help would be appreciated.

hi yi,
those buttons are attached to the palm rest itself. So when you remove the palmrest, you're also removing the buttons housing. So you're not covering anything up.

All the lcd cover's are aluminum, as well as the 8600. And yes, the d800 has the exact same chassis components as the M60.
so if you mod to the D800 or M60 housing, you'll lose the ability to use those buttons?

yea. You could get a xps palmrest tho. I think it'll fit not 100% sure tho.

Hey Spiike,

Just thought I'd ask you a quick question. Since I first booted up my 8600 I've felt that the power light should be blue rather than green. You have far more electrical know-how and in-the-laptop-time logged than I do. Would it be possible to switch out the light that ships with a different colored one?

Just curious,
Tim

Hey... just a tip i would like to share... for the trackpoint and keyboard fixes...

Take some plain adhesive tape and wrap the head of your screwdriver in it... It doesnt scratch the blue portion of the laptop while opening ... at all....

Also... to make the keyboard 100% perfect. I tried to peel off a little of the adhesive tape's covering.. (small portions... under page up and right arrow key... approx same size as the keys themselves..1 cm square each....)

Then carefully place the keyboard in place... and the keyboard sticks ... making it PERFECT... believe me...

Btw... for taking out.... just pulling slighty unsticks the keyboard... because the area of exposed glue is very little... so no damage...

That's odd. Mine are still going strong. But then again, I do have a 150 ohm resistor there.
