Modding your Dell laptop - Page 52

I have a custom board, with a custom graphics card. How cool is that? I have PCI-E, which I don't believe is on the market in the M70, and an nVidia card with 256 MB of VRAM.
That would be the same 256MB NVidia PCI Express card issued to every M70 made. Nothing custom or different, but a great GPU all the same.

Modding an XPS M140 video card?!?!

First of all is this process even possible.

Here is the situation, I purchased this computer because the Dell advertisement said that this computer was GREAT for Gaming...so I ordered it, when I attempted to download a 3 year old online game

http://www.virtualrc.com/game/games.aspx?exp=4

the computer said I didn't have enough video card to run program...

I contacted Dell, they said I could return the computer with a restock fee of $240 and possibly get a new one....WTF, is there a better way of getting around this problem...

I purchased this unit SOLELY for gaming, and as it stands, I have a 6.5lb paperweight....any help would be greatful....

Sorry Wayne - you got yourself a multimedia laptop, not a gaming machine. The M170 is the gaming system since it has a high powered 3D graphics card (256MB GeForce 6800 or 7800). The M140 only has the integrated 'Intel Media Accelerator', which shares memory with the system board (up to 128MB).

How long ago did you get the machine? If you're within 30 days you should be able to return it without a restocking fee.

FIGURES....

I purchased it just prior to Christmas....I will call Dell tomorrow...but the last guy I spoke with about it said the restock fee was 230.....and i told him the date I purchased it...feel robbed ya know...

But thanks for the help and information...

Hey. I just found this thread and havent really had enough time to dig through the whole thing although im very impressed with the mods on the front page.

My question is if anyone has made a successful mod of the dell logo on the top of the laptop in which the actual dell name is "erased" and some kind of personal insignia is put in its place? Im going to be getting my hands on an inspiron 1000 (the high end model: 512mb ram, 40gb hd, li-ion battery), and the first idea that came across my mind was a logo redesign. Just curious if anyone had a procedure that actually worked well for this?

my host got mad at me because i'm verging on slashdot level for those tutorials. Until I can find a host that's free I can't post up those tutorials.

So i just did the i8600 to d800 chassis mod and it turned out GREAT, i ordered a complete parts kit from http://ww.parts-people.com for $89.00 dollars, i also ordered a D800 hard drive caddy. Everything was in pristine condition, the swap only took about 30 minutes and i did the keyboard mod while changing. overall its a very good mod, the style is far superior to the i8600 case and just looks and feels more professional.

Hey Spike, when I try to open up your guides for the keyboard mod and the 8600 chassis mod, all of the pictures don't show up. If you could please post your toutorials elsewhere so that I can perform them. Thanks a bunch

Same here, all the images on your site seem to be dead

That's because publicity from Digg.com has made my server say "hit the road" or pay up for the HUGE bandwidth you're using. I think you can google cache of the tutorials and still read them.

Also, I'll be listing my laptop on ebay soon so if you want it keep an eye out. I need money for the navigation in my 330ci and well.. I have no need for a computer since my new job supplied me with a brand new one.

If you send me the image files, I could probably mirror them for you, I've got a few spare gigs. As long as my bandwidth isn't raped

those are some nice mods.

Anyone do the i8600 cooling mod recently? Where did ya get your copper from and how much AS5 did you use? I'd probably want enough for two laptops, is 3.5 g enough?
I just got some copper and I won't be needing even a 1/4 of what I have. I'd be glad to sell some to you if you need some
post #1040 of 1095
I used about 3/4 of a 3.5g for the heat mod..
