Modding your Dell laptop - Page 7

just spoken to dell customer support

Hello,

I've been affected by the pointstick button problem (takes too much pressure to activate them).
I've called dell customer support explaining the problem and their workaround is to send somebody to replace the whole keyboard/touchpad/buttons at once. Of course they have to open the laptop and they don't assure it will cure the problem....
Also interesting he tried pressing those 2 buttons on his i8600 right there and he said they're very firm, even firmier than the touchpad buttons ( )

also told this guy about adding some king of material under the button to fill the gap (see tutorial on this thread) and he adviced me not to do it as I would void my warranty.

I've put the problem on hold (the engineer is not coming) as I don't really want the whole system opened up for 2 stupid buttons.

Has anybody been luckier with the customer support?

cheers
Luca

Well let just say it like this anything u do to ur laptop will void the warranty. but if u are going to think about the warraty do much u are never going to fix anyproblem your computer my have. if u have a problem with this u should do the one with the tape. that can just come off. If u didnt know everything that sticks comes off with heat. you can put 2m or 3m tape. and if u need to take it off just use a blow drier and it will come off with a trace. Is the same thing when u are opening electonics they put there warning stickers where the part separeat so u can break it as opeing it. but a hair drier is ur best friend in the case. If u have a Xbox try it. I think there are even reviews on how to open one.

Proud new owner of a 9100 thats on its way, any LED mods for that one? Or any in particular?
I would say the LED mod could be done similar to that of the i8600.

hey guys,

i took a look at the actual LEDs for the power button and stuff, and i'm pretty sure LED on this website would work:

www.coolbattery.com

I do mods for Sanyo cellphones. and i always order size 0603 LEDs from the website above, and they work like a charm. How do i post pics on here? I'll post a before and after pic of my cellphone mods.

Hi Spiike, this is about your "Chassis conversion". I am going to follow your tutorial.
You mentioned that the 8600 hard drive caddy on the d800 palm rest sticks out a little, but what I've found on eBay the D800 caddy seems the same to the 8600 one. They even have the same part#06x610. Are they really different?

One other question, is that stick-out obvious?

thanks!

Yes they are different, and not many ebay sellers know this. The d800 caddy fits flush on the edge while the 8600 will stick out. I have a close up of how much it sticks out. I have to say that it is noticeable, but doesn't hinder performance in any way. I'll try to get part numbers and a picture of the different caddies up shortly. The D800 one has a rounded edge which is quite noticeably different from teh 8600/8500's caddy.

btw, yichen you said you do mods for cell phones? Do you use a special soldering iron to solder surface mount LED's? Do you recommend a procedure to properly solder them? I've never soldered surface mount led's so I am a little inexperienced in this department.

spike,

I use a sewing pin, stick it under the LED, apply force towards the LED, sewing pin is at about an 45% angle from the PCB that the LED is soldered to. While apply force to bottom of LED using the sewing pin, take the soldering iron and touch both sides of the LED, should come right off. Keep in mind, these LEDs are like 1mm x 2mm, really freakin' small, so if you don't have steady hands, do not perform this mod, you will BREAK your cellphone's PCB, burn a hole right through it.

Go on www.sprintusers.com and search for "LED conversions" and you should see a lot of pictures.

Hi Spiike,
When you do Chassis Modification 8600 to D800/M60, do you have to replace the LCD cover with the D800/M60 one as well? I don't wanna change my 8600 cover but I am not sure if it's gonna fit the new palmrest, when closing it.

8600 cover and the lcd bezel (inside part) will fit the d800 palmrest. but not the otherway around. So you should be fine

Yeah, then it was as I thought IANOU, you'll have to swap them around. Good luck,
