ahh forgot about that mod. I'll have to solder those lil things on sometime soon. My center console is kinda out of comission right now because it is drying from all the primer I put on it. I'm going with dark blue metal flakes as paint, but I'm not sure if it will be too metallic. It's cool tho because from far away it looks very dark but upclose it is more blue.

if you need them to be hosted, email me the pics i'll host them.

cool joe, i'm waiting for my badge. Heath, the guy that makes those custom badges, is extremely busy with some huge metal sculpting project so many people's badges have been delayed. Which is why I couldn't post up how the wiring goes.

Well let me know i would like to c this MOD. I order a LCD from Ebay so when i get it im going to give the led mod other try. and other thing how do i test to make sure i didnt burn out my led in my last try.

Has anyone thought of using a soft touch or low profile switch for the lcd mods? Kind of like the reset button on a router ? That would be cool !!

Nice Mods by the way! Thanks for the time you have involved!!

Thanks for the update spiike. The mod looks sweet and I'm quite interested in modding mine with a custom badge as well.

Sux to hear that he's backed up from a project, but it happens. Hopefully he'll be able to get back to making the badges soon so I can order mine.

looks great. did you do the caps lock num lock and powerbutton as well?
i could've done the caps/num/scroll lock LEDs too, but they're rarely on, so i just decided not to. The power button looks like a larger LED, so i didn't do that one either. The battery LED is a dual LED setup, i'mma try ta do red for both when it's charging and when the battery is low. I'll post more pics later.

i think the only mod id like to do to mine is swap the case over to one of those sexy silver alienware cases.. although i guess thats impossible?
You never know. i think the Area-51m uses a 15.4" widescreen display too. The only problem would be gatting your hands on the case. You might be able to find a case or a junk Area-51m on eBay (watch out for scams), or I think you can buy the chassis from Uniwill (this will not have the glowing eyes or the rubber handles). See the following...

Alienware does not sell barebones laptops...period.

So how is someone getting these for a barebones setup? Because they're Uniwill chassis...NOT Alienware chassis. Buy one...I gaurantee it will show up without the Alienware lid.

As for your statement about not being a child, I'm sure you're not...you're just acting like one.

G'day Spiike, nice mods and great tutorials. In regards to your cooling mod (up and coming) I was having a think about some options. Obviously you can use an external notebook cooler and software programs for internal fans. I was thinking about Arctic Silver though, which a lot of companies like Hypersonic and Voodoo claim to use. Any ideas of how useful this stuff is and how and where you would apply it?

While I'm at it, I have been keeping an eye out for the M60 chassis parts availability here in Australia. Seem pretty hard to get hold of, so any other ideas? Do you have parts nos. for these yet?

Cheers

I dont' think Arctic silver would provide too much benefit. I run my videocard overclocked at 350/250 all the time with no problems in heating. So unless you are going to try extreme overclocking, there would be no need for it on the videocard. Although there was a link someone posted on how to apply arctic silver compound.

Here is a link to how to do it:

Good news and Bad news
Bad news: Heath, the creator of the custom badges, has decided not to make anymore at this time because he was not getting enough orders. In the past couple months he received about 10 orders. Now there are more than 10,000 registered members on these forums, and I'm pretty sure more than 10 would like a customized badge. I'll make a thread after I talk to Heath regarding if we get enough people to order that he can make one more batch of customized steel badges.

Good news: My painting is almost done (except the base because it didn't come in yet). I'm debating to just go ahead and paint the original base since this is taking so long. Palmrest, mice, lid turned out awesome. The finish is better than my BMW 318i. I'll post pics up shortly, as well as my methodology on how to paint a laptop.

well i want one!

Hi, spike, how does the d800/M60 mod work?

i notice on the websites, the side profile of the two laptops are different?

so, the only part of the 8600 which stays is the base? also, does the colour match that of the CD drive and HDD covers?

i would like to do this mod... i find the 8600 plastic casing very crappy... is the M60 also plastic? just better built or its completely metal?

is there a difference between the d800 and M60 cases?

thanks,

Loz
