Sounds good.

the hinge looks different cause' i did the chassis mod. D800/M60 LCD hinge where the LEDs are is different from the 8600

Here you go... just finished the pictures. Hope you don't mind that I didn't put much effort in making the pictures more presentable.

http://www.hkss.com/inspiron8600

You'll find the following:

1. Pictures of the inside, including the Pentium-M CPU, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo GPU, the 2nd Fan (found in the middle of the Inspiron 8600) I replaced (including model number -- think we can buy a replacement from an Adda reseller?), and the LEDs found on the right hinge.

2. Pictures of WUXGA vs WSXGA+ comparisons. This should definitely help people decide between the two resolutions.

3. Pictures of the Inspiron 8600 with and without the Blue Velvet QuickSnap cover for those not sure if they are willing to shell out $39 for that cover. In my opinion, laptop looks fine either way, but the QuickSnap will help keep scratches of the cover at a minium.

Hope this helps. Oh, and I look forward to suggestions on what Wooster is trying to accomplish: separating the "LED Bars" (didn't know what to call them) to prevent light cross-over.

hay mate! cool, thanks for those pictures!

how come you took off teh heatsink and GPU fan for your M9600P?

I'm too scared too, but want to do something about the GPU temp!!!

did you mod it or improve the connetion to the heat sink?

Hi Lozza,

I'm too chicken to mod the laptop to add the LED to the Logo (like the Apple laptops) too. It's cool to have though! I've read the tutorials but they sound awefully difficult and seem to require good soldering skills (I'm ok with soldering though.) One day I may, but any modding will be done on the Desktop computer first (where it's more easily replaceable.)

I've also thought of adding the LEDs to the speakers and the CPU exhaust area, but then I thought, "this could be distracting for my students when I have to turn off the lights to do my presentations." I teach IT at neliance.com and have thought of adding Case modding as an extra curriculum for quite some time. Just never took the time to actually learn and do it.

The heatsink was taken off to get to the fan Yup, that's all there was to it haha

oooohhh... you changed the GPU fan???

to a brushless motor??

or is it already a brushless motor?

how come you changed the GPU fan?

I want to do something about the GPU temp.. its a major concern on my laptop.. (always over 100 according to I8Kfangui when i game....)

Not sure if you have seen this yet or not Lozza, but if you feel like having a go, a nice little tutorial on applying arctic silver to improve heat sink transfer for the M10 card. Originally for 8500 M10 conversions, but I see no problem with doing this in 8600s that are overheating. What rev is your card?
Cheers

how do i know wht revision my card is?

AFAIK its a Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro.

I might do that mod if need be.....

was hoping if there were any more aggressive mods?

Lozza,

The fan was what came with the WUXGA system. I forgot to check what the WSXGA+'s fan was (which now is in the WUXGA system.) I replaced the fan because the newer laptop (WUXGA) had rattling noises coming from the fan. Since the WSXGA+ was still here, I simply did a swap.

Your GPU temperature: If vendors sell higher-end fans in that shape and size, I don't see a reason why not to buy one, although I'm not sure if the voltage used by the fan is standard (or more importantly: GIVEN by the Radeon.)

I agree that you could try using Arctic Silver to enhance heat transfer, but be careful: put on too much and you might cause a meltdown Seriously... be sure you know how to apply it before you actually do it. Do your research.

Hey, I noticed on ebay they now have complete kits for all of the D800 pieces for the chassis swap including the base. How difficult is it to swap the base also in the mod, I'm very interested in doing it, but was curious if the base would be more difficult than what already is required.

I don't know for sure, but when the DELL tech guy replaced my motherboard at my house, he got the mobo off the base, using just regular tools(screwdrivers, screws) and had the new mobo in the laptop, and had it entirely put back together within an hour

mobo and base come apart rather easily last time i took it apart.

Hi spiike!

are you gonna paint your battery?

ok ok.....

you are a master of suspense!!!

I'm not sure if this qualifies as "modding" (since it's software based), but: do any of you know of any tutorial on replacing the Dell BIOS Startup logo? I dislike the way it looks when compared to Sony's cool startup animation and sound.
Yeah you can get it from the DELL downloads, at support.dell.com. Though you can't have sounds, and it can only be a 16color bmp image, under a certain number of kb's(i think 65?).

... I want 2 mods i havent heard mentioned yet.. (or at least i havent seen yet)

every time i use my lappy with the power point... i ALWAYS take out the batter, its my habit, i never run the system WHILE charging and never run in the power point wiht a battert in the system. I'm pedantinc about batteries.. thats just me. ANYWAY the point is... its annoying since taking out the battery means i lose one of my rubber supports.. lappy bends down on the bottom right hand side while using... whats the best option? i need some sort of additional rubber stop stuck to the bottom.....

second mod i'd like, is something to keep the power socket fastened into the laptop? on more than 5 occasions have pulled lappy towards me, and had cord pulled out from the back. Quite annoying, and prolly not the best for the laptop... I need some kind of hook to keep it attatched, even if the cord is tugged on? What do you guys think?

then a simple clip release or something of the like when you want to unplug it...

anyone else have the same problems as me?

Solution to #1 - Leave the battery in. There is no way that you are going to be able to damage a Li-ion battery while its in the laptop.

Solution to #2 - One word: superglue
