Modding your Dell laptop - Page 17

Acetone you can get at any supply store.
Never heard of soldering paste, perhaps you mean flux(sp)?
I would assume rapid glue would be super glue
post #322 of 1095
if you look at this link http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500videoheat.htm he mentions soldering paste to clean the copper plate

I want to post a full tutorial from beginning to end. If I post now it will be incomplete since the ebayer sent me the wrong hdd caddy. I've also had work and night class and my internship and lots of golf and tennis to keep me busy all day long. Expect the paint mod within the next week.

As for the cooling mod, I have no purpose for doing it because even far cry runs fine with high settings and a lil overclocking. I have never had heating issues. So "if it aint broke don't fix it" policy applies here. Besides, there is already a tutorial floating around that someone wrote up that shows u how to do it.

this is what i mean i have been lookig for one verysmall not really caring about the quality but the size. u know the CIA have really small ones so i was just wondering if anyone had looked into this or has found something that would fit in the hinge on the laptop (right on top of where it say 'Inspiron | 8600).

BTW, in regards to the LED mod, its in progress for me. I am going to make some minor changes, but right now I am just collecting parts (waiting for LEDs to come in, slow shipping).
Anyway, picked up two small slide switches today at Radio Shack (two becasue they came in a pack, but I may use two circuts, IE speakers and fans, to be determined later).
Will take pics shortly.

Also, spike I need some assistance, while I was doing a minor CPU mod (thermal paste change)I noted that the back side of my USB ports are covered, there is a little metal plate there protecting the back wires, I did not remember you mention them in your tutorial. I tried to remove it, but it does not seem to come off at all (looks to be part of the overall package. Is there anywhere else I can get 5V power off of?

Ok, nevermind, pics are not going to be happening, my camera just died.
Says "Camera Needs Service E00" on the screen.......

webcam mod?

Hi,
I'm very excited about the possibility of a webcam mod, however, I'm confused as to where the webcam would go? Looking at webcams, is the logitech's notebook webcam too big?
Is it mentioned that the webcam to be used is the logitech quickcam for notebooks?

if tahts going in the left hinge, that looks way too big!

maybe its a different webcam.

Loz

edit: found this http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...CONTENTID=5040

this is more likely...
How is the camera integration supposed to work? Are there spare USB headers on the 8600's mobo in which to attach the cam or are we going to have to highjack one of the two USB ports already installed?

I don't mind drilling into a D800 case for the cam mod but I dont really want to do anything that is not ultimately reversable and I really dont think I'll have an external USB to spare...

looking at the specs on the smallest usb webcam, which is still about 1/8 of an inch, I'm not going to do the webcam mod. Besides I'll probably get a sager 8790 within the next year. Also drilling the left hinge= needing to repaint it which I dont want to do.

this is the smallest i could find so far

Update on tutorial: eta by thurs at the latest.

Also, i forgot to update how I put the switch in the laptop. I'll post up how my switch looks by thurs.

I did everything there except for lapping the HS. It is not possible to do on our HS due to the protrusions everwhere (screws sticking out), the copper plate is also recesed into the the HS a very small ammount, but it is enough to make lapping it impossible as far as i can tell.
