What's the "eraser stick fix"? That's not the same as the "trackstick fix" is it? (which I plan to do this weekend, btw!)

Thanks for posting all of this. While I'll likely shy away from the chasis swap, the little things you're showing here make some of the little annoyances disappear!

haha yea it is the same. old school ibm used to nickname the trackstick eraserhead

Hey Spiike,

On the chassis mod, do you have to replace all the parts you mentioned at the same time?

Or can I just install the D800 palm rest?

The 8600 center console is actually different in shape (top left corner) from the d800 center console. But, palm rest AND center console first is ok. the 8600 lcd bezel fits fine against the d800 palm rest.

Update: LED modification tutorial uploaded.
For those that are new, All tutorials are found on the first page.

can I get some feedback, and if there are any broken links (my host is being annoying).

All links are working fine on my end. Thanks for helpful tutorials!! That LED mod is cool! Ever thought of integrating an off/on switch?

i did. it's at the end of page 2.

btw since i'm getting so many pm's about where to get parts.
I got all my parts on ebay. 4dcomputers was the seller I bought from (palm rest, bezel) and they have an online store on ebay. rustyw6cys from Cameronelectronics is where whom i got the console from. Transactions were smooth. 4dcomputers did use a regular screwdriver to remove the lcd bezel (inside half) so there are some dents on the edges, but i didn't really mind those. If you do, I might recommend someone else for the lcd bezel.

From my experience, I would be wary of the auctioneer "Companystyle" who is associated with salvageplus.com. It took more than a month to receive my lcd cover, which is why some of my tutorials took so long. I called usps about the tracking number and they said they never recieved the product to ship. I almost reported fraud, but they finally decided to ship my items before I called my credit card company.

Pretty slick LED mod. Actually been considering doing this to my 600m. Since it appears I'll be keeping it (or my parents may be purchasing it from me).

Ok about the parts which part are u talking about the u go off ebay. i remember the u said to go to the site to get the electronic part but what part did u get from Ebay. and by the way did u get the soldering iron from raido shack ( and how much was it.

I was just open the lap really fast yesterday and i was see the LCD and the Power button console does wires seem like they can break really fast. any idea so i can take it off with confidence. thank you. kind of scared u know $1800 not cool. What mostly i liked about the review was the fact that there is not soldering on the laptop just the wires. i think that cool. anyway man any idea on how to take off the LCD Ect part with connection of that sort.

ebay items include:
from seller 4dcomputers= palmrest, LCD bezel
from seller cameronelectronics= center console
from seller companystyle= lcd cover (i don't recommend them b/c potential fraud)
they all have an auction "store" but they're the bigger part distributors on ebay.

radio shack items include:
15V soldering iron $5 on sale
rosin free silver bearing solder $4
lead free flux $5
24 guage ribbon wire $5

Which wires are you talking about "..lcd and powerbutton console does wires.." do you mean the wires that connect to the video card from the lcd or the wires from the center console to the motherboard?

As long as you don't liftup the centerconsole really hard before disconnecting it, you shouldn't break the wires. As for the LCD wire, it's a thick cluster of wires and wont break. All the connectors have a cloth pull tab, so it is easy to pop them off.

noobtrak when you pm'ed me earlier were you referring to the led pics? you never responded which pics you wanted

no problem, although my type of superglue doesnt leave any mark on the button.
As it takes some time before u apply the glue to the foil before you can put it in the right place on the button, over the circle thingie.

you need only enough to hold it in place so you can fit it on, after that it stays in place by itself.

just remember not to spill superglue elsewhere on the button..., or scratch yourself somewhere afterwards...

update: i added 2 more led's to each speaker so each one has 3 leds total 2 3 mm and a 5mm. it's now really as bright as the ones i posted on the tutorial, cause 1 led isnt really that bright during the day.

i'm also still waiting on the casebadge from heath

i would make a video of how to solder, but the way i do it is unconventional, and i have no time to do it.

here's a link to the many out there on how to solder
http://www.aaroncake.net/electronics/solder.htm

i just googled "how to solder" and got a gazillion hits.
