Modding your Dell laptop - Page 4

You can try this

For those of you that want to put the switch but cant afford to use the PCI Card next to the CD-Rom there is a space where u can put it. I dont know if it fits because I haven't tried it, but i don't see why it shouldnt fit. I have a PCI Wireless card, So i can't Afford to do the switch part. just thought of an idea. when i do it, I will c if this will work and post something on this. a switch is good if you are planning on going wardriving or ride the Subway (like me everyday) and don't want to get alot of attention.

wow i would never open mine up in a subway... in pity for the mugger getting beat up by yours truly of course . I think I'm going to try to encorporate a switch there too, because I ordered a pcmcia 4-1 card reader. so that switch in the port has to be moved. This might not happen tho until my finals are over. give me a month and i'll post up how i put a push button switch there.

well i just got finished changing the palmrest and powerbar on my 8500 to a d800. i havent changed the lcd cover yet. and let me tell you, i didnt have any foam tape or teflon tape to do the keyboard mod or the chassis mod, but i can tell the keyboard is tons better now and the chassis doenst make as many noises either, and thats just from changing those two parts. i will have to get the new hd caddy. and the touchpad is sooooo much nicer. thanks again for the ideas.

is any of this gonna work on a 5100?? I really want to know if my laptop (specs in sigs) can be modded like the ones on page 1. If anyone knows I would really appreciate it

np chucka, I'm glad it all worked out for you. I concur, the touchpad is definately nicer.

whitefire, led mod will work because all usbports supply a 5v charge. keyboard fix will work on all dell laptops I believe. if d600 chassis is similar to the 5100, than that might be an option. I don't think the 5100 had a trackstick, but if it does then that fix works too.

Hello very impressed with this and I am following your toturial. One thing I don't get is that how come u connect those 3~3.4v leds to a 5v usb port without burning them out? I do believe that those leds u got are 3~3.4v.

nope they are 5v led's.
This is the description for green, but the lady on the phone assured me it was the same input voltage for blue, as well as red and yellow.

Can I make a suggestion for a Step 3 in the LED mod? How about replacing the dull green power, HD, etc lights on the bezel with blue as well. It would nicely complement the Blue of the other LED's.... and for those not game to do the other mods should be more simple to just do these.
It also should look really good and complement the blue accents on the i8600 and other models as well, regardless of doing the other LED mods.
Anyway, its something to think about.

Actually I would have but I cant find the tiny micro leds for circuit boards. It's the same led that light up cell phones. If u guys can find where the sell it I'll most definately integrate it into my tutorial
post #72 of 1095
Yeah, I think we are after the small chip LED's for that aren't we..... I'll keep my eyes open and point you towards them if I happen to spot one.

I think that the info is wrong and it's not 5v. They usually works at 3 to 4v.
no offense but ur leds might get burn out in the near future.

Well none of my LED's have burned out yet. They're shining bright as when I put them in and I keep them on 24/7. I'm pretty sure they're 5.5v.

ok how did ur header come together like this. my hearder came they came in rows. i order the same parts u did. Did u crazy glue them together

Hmm they might have sent you the wrong part, or you ordered the wrong one. Seems like you got the 1 row 10 pin or a 1 row 20 pin. If you got what I got:
Quote:
2 HEADD20 20 Pin .100 St. Male Double Headers 0.20 0.4
then it should be two rows of 10, so a total of 20 pins.

this is a 1 row header, is this what you got?

cause this is what you should have got
