spiike Im curious why dont you just upload it all to a different webhosting I decided to do a little research and found that the following site is pretty decent for free or for a very small fee if you so choose its got banner ads on the free sites but Im sure people wouldn't mind that. Check out the following site.
http://www.webhosting.usallportal.co...webhosting.htm

it comes with 3gbs of storage and 25gb of bandwidth free for the month and you get a small percentage of money for the banner ads being viewed. and then hopefully we can get a few of us to create pdf files or mirror the website so you wont have bandwidth issues in the future. I would be glad to help you if you need it.

damn it. I know everyone is waiting for me to put the tutorials back up, and I am.. but the dvd with my backup is at my dorm, and I'm at home. I asked my roommate to bring it to my house when he comes up to chicago, so they'll be up shortly. google cache will have to do for now.

Would you please share where you got your palm rest and center cover, and how much you paid? There doesn't seem to be any available on eBay right now, and the parts-people are charging $30 & $18 respectively when Spike mentioned earlier that they should cost $19 & $12 respectively.

Also, those who did just the modified chassis swap (palmrest & center console only), did you not do the LCD because you deemed it unnecessary, expensive, or because you liked the 8600 LCD back & LCD bezel better?

Thanks!

Interesting mod I found, even though its not a Dell.

This thing looks way more hack than Spiike's wiring (just kidding Spiike).

Well, I'm new here and I'd like to thank you all. Thanks a lot. I hate you all (haha). I thought I was obsessive before with my desktop. I got my i8600 and thought my modding days were over. That lasted for about a year. Then, low and behold, the other day, I found this happy little corner of heaven. Well, the old me is back, and I've already happily screwed up my keyboard and snapped a piece of my case off. WooHoo!!!

The good thing is, that is a perfect excuse to order a new case for this monster. I'm definitely going for the d800 case mod. I'm curious though. Will the 8600 LCD case look good with the d800 palmrest and body? Im not real fond of the bezel on the d800. Oh well, if not I'll just buy the whole thing.

Theres a full case on the parts people website. It says it doesnt have screws. Will the screws from my i8600 work with the d800 case?

After I get home and get the new case on, next on the list is the GPU Cooling, and then eventually, a new processor. Right now I've got a 1.7 Bania, so its sufficient. However, I would like that extra 1mb of cache.

Anyway, nice to be here. Glad to find out I'm not stuck with a non-upgradable machine.

edit- Also, Spiike or anyone else. Do you know the model number of the d800 caddy?

I've decided to go with the d800 palmrest and center cover instead of replacing the whole job.

Will it still be as solid with the 8600 base? Also, Spiike, I noticed in your paint tutorial you mentioned using teflon tape on the LCD case? I was considering using that all the way around the entire case where any edges go together. Would that be wise or would it muck something up pretty bad? And by teflon tape you are talking about the same stuff that plumbers use to tape pipes right?

Spiike, is it possible to somehow use 8600's control/media buttons on the right side of the palm rest and attach them to the D800? If I take the palm rest of the older 8600 (which had the two track stick buttons) will it fit in the D800 and will the media buttons work??

Thanks

I own a Del Inpiron 8500 with the GeForce 4200 Go and I am interested in the GPU and CPU mod, although they don't go over 70ºC and 65ºC under heavy gaming I would prefer that the fans don't kick in so often under idle. I have long experience with cooling mod of desktops but I'm new in the laptop mod arena. I've read the tutorials and have trying to get the damm 30x30x1.5 mm cooper plate for the GPU for a year with no success. I know you can get it on onlinemetals.com but they don't serve to Spain and I know even if I they would serve to Spain it would be really expensive.

Anyway I've decided to go on with the CPU mod, that I suppose would be just replace the thermal pad with artic silver 5, am I right? or should I need another cooper plate for the CPU?

Thanks,

i took it off cause after painting the paint has closed any gap. teflon tape was before the paint mod to remove squeeking, and yea that's teh tape plumbers use on the threads of pipes to water seal them.

Memory Substitution

Hello, Group.

I just recently installed a 1 gig PC 2700 333 Mhz chip into my 5150. Can I put the 512 chip into my daughter's Inspiron 600M?

The 600M has PC 2100 memory in it now. Both have CL2.5 latency.

Thanks,

Any chance someone could send me the info on the keyboard mod? I have my copper to do the GPU cooling mod and wanted to do the keyboard mod at the same time. I have time over the Christmas break to do it.

Thanks for the help,

Martian

Has anyone ever considered the possibility of changing the DVD module to a higher, newer, or better model? Like if you can find one made for the same setup cheaper, swapping casings. Is that possible? Just a thought.
Yes they have.

I did the cooling mod and the keyboard mod (to the best of my memory) yesterday. All went well. My temps are significantly lower and my keyboard is nice and stiff.

Thanks guys,

Martian
