Did the chassis mod - deeyamn! After some vacillation, I went ahead with the chassis mod. I wasn't sure if it was going to be worth the cost of the palmrest, center console, hard-drive caddy and keyboard. I am very glad that I did it - it's a low cost almost instant upgrade to my i8600. The chassis rules and the notebook is more streamlined, sleek and seems like it is made from one piece - it must be the curved lines. I decided to keep the 8600 lcd back & bezel.
Spike - thanks a lot. Both for figuring that it could be done, and then for writing a mod.
Thanks, bobvr for the pics and the part numbers.
I got the D800 keyboard & HD caddy, and updated the pics above. The keyboard feels a lot more solid than the 8600 one, and the HD caddy fits better but there is still a 1 mm offset from the chassis. Oh well. I love the results.
