Modding your Dell laptop - Page 44

post #861 of 1095
Agreed.

I'm using a pure silver plate with Arctic Silver 5 and I get 50* Idle in my warm room.
It doesn't go higher than 65* in intense gaming.

I'm doing this mod together with LED mod very soon, but this post raised a question. Should I go with pure silver plate or copper plate? What are the ups and down when comparing them? And what is the local store that I could go find these? I couldn't search for any of the plates on eBay.

Go with whatever is cheaper. The different is negligible.

I did the cooling mod on my i8600 which greatly reduced my GPU temps. In fact during intense gaming my GPU is actually cooler than my CPU by a few degrees. My GPU usually runs about 68 degrees while gaming and my CPU hovers about 71-72 degrees. Has anyone done a CPU cooling mod? It seems like my CPU could be a little cooler. I'm thinking about cracking open the case again and having a look at the processor cooling and perhaps putting on some Arctic Silver. I thought I'd ask here if anyone had already looked into it before I start taking things apart.

Where do you buy the copper plates required for the cooling mod?

I've been thinking about making a replacement cover for my i8600's RAM.

Basically, it would consist of a sheet of silver (or copper) and act as a heasink for the RAM.

It's still in the "planning" stages, but I think with a little planning and my dad's skill, we can do it.

I've also been thinking of doing the painting mod to paint my i8600c completely black.
Has anyone actually done the painting mod? How did it turn out? Any extra tips? Any pictures?

Check out the beggining of this thread - Spiike's the man. This thread is way to long. It should be broken up and made into a board of its own.

I'm in the process of making thick sterling silver (nearly pure silver) DDR pads for my i8600c 1GB PC2700 (512x2).

I'm planning to apply Arctic Silver 5 on the DDR cores (the 4 black blocks), place the pure silver blocks on the cores, and then put the screw Dell cover back with relative tightness.

Anyone see any problems with this setup? Or have any suggestions for me?

I'm planning of doing an antenna mod by extending the internal antenna to the lcd assembly and/or attaching an external one to the mini-pci card. If anyone's interested post here.

Oh btw spiike. I have a question for you. After I saw your tutorial on how to paint a laptop, i noticed that your touchpad color is silver. Did you paint it? If yes, what kind of paint that you use. Coz i thought before that d800 touchpad color is black

I don't think he painted it. He probably used the gray touch pad plate from his 8600's palm rest when doing the 8600->d800 conversion.

Hm, i see.. Thanks for the answer Michael. I bought the Palmrest for D800 for my hybrid conversion (XPS lcd beze + D800 Palmrest).. The palmrest touchpad is kinda crappy.. Sometimes its acts weird and the surface is not smooth anymore.. And it makes me wonder, whether i can paint the touchpad to a newer condition or not

yup, that touchpad is the touchpad for the d800 palm rest. It matches the 8600 palm rest nicely. I don't get why dell didn't just put those together in the first place.

I am ready to do LED mod tomorrow. I got all the part, but the male double headers were sent wrong. (It's not in 2 row of 10 each, but rather 1 row of 20 pin). The receipt stated clearly that the part is HEADD20, not HEAD20. Anywho I don't think that will be an issue. So, any additional tips on this project would be great! The part I worry the most is the USB wiring part. -_-

So, on this picture http://spiike.shadowdragon.net/keyboardfix/IMG_0330.jpg I could just solder 2 wires in the same row right?

=====

I will also be doing the copper plate heat reduction mod as well. I got a nice copper plate from Hobby Lobby for $2.99. The thickness demension was a little off but that's not an issue. The thing is that my dad told me not to use acetone to clean the chip with but use rubbing alcohol instead because acetone is acid and it's not recommended. Could anyone confirm that rubbing alcohol would not harm the lappy whatsoever?

=====

Lastly, I'm doing th d800 palmrest conversion without the center console. So, I hope everything fits fine. I will still have the blue center console with I8600 letters on it.

=====

I would take pictures and share them with you all, but I left my camera in the dorm room.

Anyhow, I think tomorrow is going to be a fun day. Wish me luck

I used isopropal "rubbing" alcohol to do the heat mod on my i8600 a few months ago and I'm writing this post on it now so I would say no problem.

Also, I'm an engineering in an electronics manufaturing plant and we use isopropal alcohol to clean boards all the time.

Has anyone done the keyboard fix and noticed any subsequent heat issues? It seems to me that using an assertive approach, that is a lot of mounting tape, might act as insulation.
