yes complete disassembled the lcd assembly. then dremeled out the aluminum behind the badge with a mm of overlap with the bagde, hot glued a cut piece of a cd jewel case to the inside to protect the lcd, then hot glued the badge. Relatively simple compared to installing led's.

Thinking about doing STi Sev's RAM-cooler mod to my old Gateway notebook. I think the mods are heating up causing freezing of the mouse and program lauch hotkeys to activate by themselves, etc.
If you're going to do the DDR mod, make sure you have some type of tertiary cooling solution in effect. For example, I'm running the Bytecc TDD-3000 (available from newegg), a heat-pipe implemented metal piece that your notebook sits on. It is (obviously) fanless and is supposed to draw the heat away from the computer. Not sure it works that well, even when the notebook feet are taken off. The performance is questionable. I'll have to see how the fan one works

I've got an Evercool NB-101, a 4 [quiet] fan notebook cooler that plugs into the USB for power. I scored it from Acortech for $16.30 taxed and shipped to CA (tax in CA). I haven't received it yet, but I'll post when I get it.

Make sure that if you use the DDR pads, you get something to draw the heat away.

Alas, he isn't making the badges anymore! Must find another place to get them from...

I saw a couple of posts here on ideas for a backlight keyboard mod. Before anyone tries it, take a look at this guys attempt:

Utilitarian...though not quite as nice as IBM's keyboard lamp.

Inspiron 8600 (Serial/Parallell Ports)

Is there anyone here that has an earlier 8600 with both a Serial and Parallel port on their system?

If so, is it possible for you to photograph the motherboard where both serial and parallel ports attach.

I want to attempt to restore these ports to my 8600.

Thank you.

Note: I know about port replicators, they do not work for what I need.

My LED mod is complete (stage 1). Had (have) some issues with it, look for pics in the pics forum.

Has anyone here attempted a motherboard swap; 8600 to a 8600c, or a D800 to a 8600c, to restore the Serial and Parallel ports. Were there any issues?

I still can't believe what an IDIOTIC decision it was on Dell's part to remove both ports, without adding anything, like maybe an extra USB, etc. Pure GREED to save a few extra dollars. Then on top of that, discontinue the model a few months later. I really wish I could meet the "brained one" who thought of it!!

Thanks again for your help and info. I have decided to go with the 8600 as opposed to the D800; only because the 8600 motherboard appears to be less expensive on ebay the the D800. An extra USB would be nice, though.

Thanks again mich43L!!

How would one do this? You mean connect it to the two existing usb ports from the back (like in the LED mod but now the two data wires will have to be used as well)? Will this work? Where do I separately buy the usb hub that'll fit in there?
You could probably use something like a USB extension cable to great the new port, chop the other end of and solder its connecters onto the other ports. I don't know, but that might work somehow?!?!?
What did you use for power source? The pins on the back of the 600m's usb ports are not exposed like on the 8600 pics in the LED mod tutorial.

Spiike, did the 8600's usb port originally look like the one in the pic or did you take something off of it?

The back of the usb ports on the 600m do NOT look like this pic:

Here is what 600m's usb look like from the back (sorry for the crappy quality - my digi-cam is dying):

The black plastic is a thin SHEET covering the port

Mine originally had that back cover, with some careful tugging and a pair of twezers you can remove it.

On the 8600c? Is that plate soldered on?
I would doubt that it is, as I don't think soldering plastic would work very well.

That black plastic cover feels like plastic. I'm asking about the plate that covers the top of the 4 usb pins which definitely isn't plastic.
OH. In that case, then again, I'd doubt it, but give it a little tweeze to see if it'll come off easily. if not, be vewwy vewwy careful.

Does anyone know where I can get a peice of copper for the GPU mod? Demensions are 3cm X 3cm X1.5cm according to the tutorial.

Also, for the purposes of easy return, any know where I can get JUST the heatsink for the 9600?
is their another place to get Custom badges for the dell? the link on the first post doesn't work for me
post #919 of 1095
I was looking for the same thing. www.customwatercuts.com offers well... custom cuts, so they can do the badges for you.

What I would do for that black plastic piece is to take a single edge razer and just slice off a section of it to wind the wire around. I can't see a clear close up so I'm not sure if it's safe to just tug it off.
