Compaq Presario 2100 and 2140 dead

Thread Starter
Notebook will not start. LED's light, cpu fans turns, cpu gets warm, hard drive spins. No display flicker or any activity on screen or an external monitor. There are no post beeps. I replaced with a used motherboard and got similar results. Replaced CPU, still no change. Replace memory modules, no change. This is an AMD unit. It failed without warning, has previously been great.
Any ideas on what may be wrong?? Thanks!!

sometimes these systems get cold solder in the ram sockets. you need a microscope and good soldering skills to repair it.

ive seen those cpu's go bad as well.

If you work on these check and verify BIOS chip input/outputs if the CPU swap didnt repair. RAM slots are common but this model will generally cycle on off with ram pulled.(As well as the 2100's not being as prone for slot failure). Athlon based are also known for FET's in the CPU supply line. Try flexing the board slightly also on startup..

how can he get into the BIOS if he isnt getting the system to post?

I didnt say anything about getting into the BIOS I said verify the 5V input @ the BIOS chip as well as outputs. There are quite a few hot just plugged in and when the machines not turned on. If I need to I can give you pinouts and the respective voltages. BIOS chips are a problem on these would you not agree? Also press down on the video chip and see it it trys to fire.. If your BIOS chip is socket mount we can program a chip and send cheap.. (These cost me a whopping 1.80 per new)..

"Might" be your LCD inverter and/or CCFL tube. I currently am wrestling with a Presario 2200 that works well when hooked up to an external monitor. (Hook it up, turn on monitor, then shortly after power on hit FN\F5 to toggle to monitor.) I do, however, get an initial logo flicker on the laptop LCD right after power on rather than a totally blank screen. Today I'm going to disassemble the lcd, check the connections, and see about ordering an inverter and/or CCFL. I've also found a place that will repair, including inverter and CCFL, for $115 + shipping. Complete LCDs I've found are $160\$195\$295. Anyway, you might double check yours with an external monitor to eliminate the LCD as a problem.

DOH! I see you've already checked external monitor. Sorry!!!!

It almost sounds like you arent getting the CPU locked in all the way.. Are you unlocking the socket and relocking changing the CPU? (Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question but weve seen it all here)..
