Exact same design as the Powerbooks...as expected since Asus is now the one who makes the powerbooks. (Used to be Elitegroup I think)

15.4inch WXGA/WSXGA+

Well the reason I asked was because yesterday I was using a friends powerbook, and I distinctly remember the arrow keys being abnormaly slim. This notebook seems to have the more common arrow keys found in notebooks.

I dont know how to post a link of the translated page by Babel Fish, but well here goes the text:

Asus italy has recently organized an encounter with the press in which it has intentional to introduce the own one roadmap for the segment notebook.
The presentation has been centralized on the unexpected and exclusive lines of modeli the W1, innovation of absolute relief and with interesting characteristics.

The designer of Asus they have tried to explain and to simplify the ingegneristico process that is to the base of the creation of a new product.
In the specific case of the W1 one is you leave yourself with a former-novo plan, to whose base has been one long analysis and appraisal of the requirements, the characteristics and the preferences of the customer. It has been attempted to hold in just consideration all upgrades them customers, analyzing the requirements of a customer home, rather than business or power user.

They have been considered the medium anthropological caratterisitice, to the aim to optimize the relative parameters you to the ergonomics, while it has been given great importance to the choice of the materials and the colors.
In the course of the conference they have been shown several the designs 2D and 3D as an example of the W1 plan, describing it makes that they have carried to the final creation of the notebook.

The result of the W1 plan is of indiscussa innovation for market PC, the elegance of the design (that the Powerbook di Apple remembers vaguely) and the quality of realization has not demanded some compromise to the own functionalities of a notebook.
In a weight of 3,2 Kg the new W1 encloses processori Intel Pentium M until 1,7 GHz (already is predisposed to receive the CPU of next generation Intel Dothan until 1,8 GHz), memory DDR until 1 GB, hard disk with ability until 80 GB and optical device Combo (DVD+CD-RW) or masterizzatore of DVD (DVD-RW).

The section video is composed from display a LCD from 15.4"(16:10) that and new chip graphical ATI MOBILITYTM Radeon 9600 XT, a decidedly interesting coupling.
The W1 then is equipped of an audio system evoluto, previewed in fact the integrated presence of a subwoofer in the bottom of the notebook. In order better to take advantage of the multimediali functionalities a small remote control is available, than during the transport it can be lodged in an appropriate bucket.

Interesting innovation for the utilizzatori home regards the presence of an integrated sintonizzatore TV, that it allows to visualize or to registare television images.

The availability of this model is announced for Opens them approximately, while the prices would have to oscillate between 2000 and 2500 euro (in function of the equipment).

Asus has then renewed the attention on the own lines ultracapacities them S5 and M5 who differ esenzialmente for the presence or less of the integrated optical device. We signal you a deepened book review of the S5600 model to this address, while in the next few days we will take care ourselves of the new M5600.

i don't know where you guys get that asus manufactures the powerbook.. but you are wrong. That is an apple designed and manufactured product. This machine is not even close to the same design.

Why do you say that, and what is your source?

Understand that Apple is just an OEM probably incapable of designing and manufacturing its own notebooks. It contracts large ODMs to do that. Here's a quote from TaiwanHighTech's Bring on the orders archive
Quote:
Apple, Acer NB
Compal has received orders from Apple and Acer for its 15.4 inch wide screen NBs. Compal already makes Dell and HP NBs with the same screen using the Centrino chip. Compal will ship 30-40K Powerbooks a month beginning 2H03. Quanta and Asustek currently make the 15.2 inch and 12.1 inch PowerBooks. Compal will ship 20-30K Centrino NB a month to Acer beginning 4Q03. Compal is king of 15.4 inch NBs.

great disappointment.

I was probably one of the first who was really mad about this lappy. I waited and waited. Last week came the specs..
Few things quite BAD about this lappy...

1) 15.4 screen is currently available ONLY in WXGA (1280x800) WSXGA is coming sooner or later.. possibly later
2) Ati Radeon 9600 with 64MBs. mmh...
3) No 802.11g ...

Fact is: in what this laptop currently differs from other wide aspect notebooks? Only the design? and they call it a "revolution".... well...
Take the words from Asus: "we realized that human sight is more keen onto a wide angle view.. so we take the 16:10 approach" well... fact is, Apple powerbooks apart, the first centrino widescreen was the x1000 from compaq.. then came emachines, HP, Clevo, Acer.. should I go on? Asus is just the last newcomer. Same for the other features.
Summarizing: there's really no difference between this lappy and other offers by other producers other than the exterior design.. If you think of the suggested retail price (2000-2500 Euros) you'll realize this thing is really much hype and quite few substance.
