ever feel this way?

we should be able to browse internet for 6-8 hours on a charge. 2-4 hours is restricting and it's not wise to not leave your ac adapter at home

A second battery might be a good investment.

true, but batteries are about the same size as ac adapters

it'd be nice if you could just pick up your notebook and go without anything else, then just charge overnight like a cell phone.

You can with some laptops. I've seen the IBM X60s go for over 7 hours straight with the bigger battery. Some say it could go 9 hours...now find me a cell phone that lets you gab for 7-9 hours straight.

TALKING on a cell 8hours straight is like gaming 8 hours straight on a laptop

Laptops do exist (and have for several years) that will get you that kind of battery life and better. Usually it's accomplished through ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processors and/or extended/dual batteries and having 14" or smaller screens. Looks like you just didn't get the right laptop for you when you bought it.

My girlfriend's Asus Z71A (15.4") will get 5.5 hours on a single 8-cell. With the extra optical-bay battery I imagine it'd hit the 9 hour mark.

They are out there.

Batteries aren't something that can just be made, yes, companies are always looking for a way to make batteries last longer but keep in mind that mobile systems have always increasingly energy consumption needs as they grow more powerful.

Batteries take time to develop correctly and there are various technical and chemical and safety processes that must take place first, they aren't something you just make and plug in as you're dealing with electricity generating components and chemicals.

A rush developed battery can be a hazard to carry around not to mention that if a battery is used in something that it is not made for or not treated properly it can damage the component it is being used on, explode and hurt you badly or may even kill you.

i had the impression that battery consumption was improving over the years- even with more powerful computing. i mean look at p4 to pm. and pm to dual core. batteries technology is just too stagnant.

incredible battery power does exist. just not enough money has been invested into making it cheap to manufacture.

When I had my S5NE with my 8 cell battery I got close to 8.5 hours of battery life.

*Shrug*

You need to find the right kind of laptop for this.
