Radeon video drivers, why no update Dell?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to decide if I'm going to buy another Dell laptop. I purchased an 8600i a little more than 2 years ago. I've been pretty happy with it, lcd went while it was still under warranty, but that's about it.

My problem though is it has a mobility radeon 9600 pro turbo, and even though Radeon has released 2 video driver updates this year, Dell has not put out updated drivers since 9/2005. Radeon says driver updates must be downloaded from Dell.

Being a bit of a gamer, I'm not inclined to be in the same position with another Dell laptop, anybody know why they haven't upgraded them? Or a work around? I've actually got a couple direct x games that won't work, they want me to upgrade the drivers. Is it because of Radeon and I should have gotten the Nvidia option?

You can download the latest Catalyst Mobility drivers for Radeon cards here:

ARGGGGGGH!
-I'm so friggin confused!
I have never gotten a completely straight answer trying to compare the ATI drivers to the Omega drivers.

Which is actually better?
Do I need to have the Omega drivers installed in order to install and use Ray Adams' "ATI Tool"?
If I can use ATI Tool with the "stock" ATI drivers, what do I need the Omega stuff for? ...A pretty GPU GUI?
If my 9200 laptop isn't recognizing a Sharp screen, for example, would that be something an ATI driver update could fix?

(I didn't even realize graphic cards had their own BIOS until recently.)

Omega and Warcat drivers are pretty much "Tweaked" ATI drivers by enthusiasts. You get better performance but aren't really tested like the original ATI drivers.

A few more words on Omega Drivers. The guy who does the Omega Drivers is called Angel Trinidad, his work has be recently recognised by ATI and he is now part of their Beta testing team. There has been considerable argument over the years about which drivers are the best. This is a bit of a joke as the ATI drivers themselves are exactly the same thing no matter who packages them. The only difference is the registry tweaks that hook the drivers into Windows. The original Omega Drivers were about having a standard set of drivers that you could use on any laptop regardless of manufacturer. However, it doesn't always work out this way, due to errors in coding and the speed at which LCD technology changes. Example below; The original ATI (Acer) drivers included in my Ferrari were flawed as they failed to play Half-Life 2, so needless to say I went looking for ones that worked. The earlier versions of Omegas didn't work but eventually I found a set that did. At this time some other Ferrari users were using ATI Catalysts that had to be moded with the Driver Heaven mod tool. There was a difference in 3dmark scores between the Omegas and the DH moded Catalysts. The Omegas came in about 200 points ahead of moded Catalysts. This wasn't because the Omegas were better, they were just cleaner, and because of this ran with 100% reliability. I still use this set of drivers today - 8 months on and they have never (repeat NEVER) crashed. (In fact this is the original reason I came to this forum, to solve the problem for some other Ferrari users) So in answer to your original question, the best set of drivers to use are the ones that work best with your PC.
